The verdict

The Hatch Restore 3 is a $169.99 bedside clock with a sunrise alarm, sleep sounds and a night light, set up through the Hatch Sleep app. It suits you if you want physical buttons and a phone-down bedtime routine. The catch is that it needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Hatch+ is $59.99 a year for more audio.

The trade-off

It requires Wi-Fi and an app, and Hatch publishes no lux or color temperature for the light.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want a sunrise alarm and sleep sounds in one clock, and you're fine setting it up in an app.

  • You want a sunrise alarm with sounds and a night light in one plug-in device
  • You'll use the Hatch Sleep app for setup and are fine with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi at the bedside
  • You want buttons for snooze, volume and routines so your phone can stay down at night
  • You're happy with the built-in sounds and don't need a paid library

THINK TWICE IF

  • You have no 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi at the bedside, since Hatch says Restore 3 requires Wi-Fi
  • You want a stated light output, since Hatch publishes no lux or color temperature
  • You want a battery-powered clock, since Hatch says to keep it plugged in
  • You want sleep tracking, which Restore 3 doesn't have
  • You want to play your own music or podcasts, since it isn't a Bluetooth speaker
What still needs checking
  • The sunrise durations you can choose and the light's maximum brightness in lux
  • The color temperature of the white light
  • Whether alarms keep running if the Wi-Fi connection drops, since Hatch says only that Wi-Fi is required
  • Whether it has any backup battery, since the specifications list none and the setup guide says to keep it plugged in
  • Power draw and typical use
  • Which size and weight figures are current

Does the Hatch Restore 3 need a subscription?

No, the Restore 3 still works without Hatch+, but you get basic features and core content only1. Hatch’s help center says the sunrise alarm, sleep sounds, light options and rest reminder come pre-loaded and don’t need the membership7.

Setup does ask you to start a 30-day Hatch+ free trial, and you can cancel it and keep the basic features6. After the trial, Hatch+ costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year1. Hatch’s membership page lists 20 alarms in the free tier10. Its product page says Hatch+ gives access to more than 2,500 pieces of original audio1.

InstallationPlug in the power cord and keep it plugged in, as Hatch's setup guide says

Plug in the power cord and keep it plugged in, as Hatch's setup guide says. Then download the free Hatch Sleep app and follow its steps to connect the clock to Wi-Fi and register it. After that you can run routines and alarms from the buttons on the device. The box holds the clock, a power cord and a quick-start guide.

WarrantyOne year from registration, for the original purchaser

One year from registration, for the original purchaser. Hatch covers defects in materials and workmanship when the device is used as its manual describes, and the year starts when you register it in the app. Products from unauthorized resellers aren't covered. Hatch may limit how many replacements one person gets, and a replacement may be refurbished. Replacement units carry no warranty of their own. In the US you contact Hatch support within the year, and Hatch supplies a return label.

Returns30 days from the ship date, with free return shipping

30 days from the ship date, with free return shipping. Hatch calls this a 30-night bedside trial. The device must be bought directly from Hatch, and you start the return in Hatch's returns portal to get a prepaid label. There are no restocking fees, and the refund goes back to your original payment method after Hatch processes the device. Exchanges are only for another color of the Restore 3. A free Hatch+ trial has to be canceled through the app store, or it renews. A unit bought from a third-party reseller goes back under that store's policy.

More about this assessment

The Hatch Restore 3 is a plug-in bedside sound machine, light and alarm clock that you set up with the Hatch Sleep app. Its sunrise alarm brightens from red through orange to white before your chosen sound plays. Hatch's US store lists it at $169.99 in Putty, Greige and Cocoa. It needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Hatch says to keep it plugged in. It works without a subscription, but setup asks you to start a 30-day Hatch+ trial. Hatch+ then costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Hatch doesn't publish the light's brightness in lux or the sunrise lengths you can pick. A one-year warranty and a 30-night trial apply.

Strengths on paper

  • The sunrise alarm, sleep sounds and light options come pre-loaded and don't need Hatch+, per Hatch
  • A side slider turns off every alarm without the app
  • The Big Button snoozes for 9 minutes or stops the alarm, and turning it changes the volume
  • You can store up to three routines and swap between them from the device
  • A 30-night trial with free return shipping
  • The same $169.99 price in all three colors

Limitations

  • It needs the app for setup and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and brightness can only be changed in the app
  • Hatch doesn't publish the light's lux or color temperature, or the sunrise lengths you can choose
  • Setup asks you to start a Hatch+ trial, which then costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year
  • Without Hatch+ you get basic features and core content only
  • The one-year warranty starts at app registration, covers the original purchaser and excludes unauthorized resellers
  • Returns are only for devices bought directly from Hatch, and exchanges are only for another color
  • It isn't a Bluetooth speaker, and listening on headphones is a Hatch+ feature for iOS only
  • The product page and the help center give different sizes and weights

PLAN YOUR OWNERSHIP COSTS

What will it cost to own?

Change the assumptions to fit your use. Leave an unknown cost blank. Add water, subscriptions, cleaning, shipping and taxes if they apply. Use average operating power, not the maximum rating.

3-year known subtotal

$169.99

Incomplete: energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That doesn’t mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • Purchase is the $169.99 list price on Hatch's US store on Oct 20, 2026, before tax. Hatch lists free shipping.
  • Hatch+ is optional for the device to work, so this estimate leaves it out. Keeping it adds $59.99 a year on the annual plan, or $179.97 over three years. The monthly plan is $5.99, which is $71.88 a year.
  • Hatch's help center says setup requires you to start the free Hatch+ trial. You can cancel it and keep the basic features. Cancel before the trial ends if you don't want to be charged.
  • Hatch lists no parts, refills or batteries, so recurring costs apart from Hatch+ are $0. It doesn't publish the clock's power draw or typical use, so energy cost is unknown.

Evidence & sources.

  • Manufacturer claimHatch says its sunrise alarm mimics a natural dawn, moving from red to orange to white before the alarm sound plays. It says the gradual light prompts your brain to release cortisol, the hormone that cues your body to wake.1 Hatch cites no study for this statement or for the Restore 3 itself.
  • Published studyIn two home studies of people who had difficulty waking early, an alarm clock with an artificial dawn reduced complaints of sleep inertia compared with no dawn. The first study compared 0, 50 and 250 lux for two weeks each, and the second compared 0 lux with a self-selected dawn intensity.15 The measure was self-reported sleep inertia complaints. The abstract names no lamp or sample size. Melatonin timing didn't shift, and the authors say mechanisms other than a clock shift are needed to explain the result. It says nothing about the Restore 3.
  • Published studyIn eight adults who reported difficulty with morning waking, a simulated dawn in the last 30 minutes of sleep gave higher alertness ratings. Reaction times after waking were also faster (0.81 against 0.86 seconds) than on a control morning.16 This was a randomized crossover study with only eight people. It measured alertness and simple tasks shortly after waking, not health outcomes, and the abstract doesn't name the lamp used.
  • Published studyIn 23 adults with an average age of 67, a dawn simulation in the last 30 minutes of one overnight stay led to 33% less sleep before waking. Blood pressure was lower before they woke, and the authors found no change in alertness, balance or cardiovascular function after standing.17 This was a laboratory study of two overnight stays, and 12 of the participants reported a history of morning dizziness. It says nothing about a home clock over months.
