COST TO OWN

What bed cooling systems, sheets and masks cost to own over three years

For a bed cooling system, the price tag is only the start. A membership, filters, water and electricity can add to it every year, and some makers don’t publish those costs. Sheets and masks cost less to own, though they wear out. This page explains the three-year estimate on every sleep review, walks through an example and lists the recurring costs each review records.

The bottom line

The estimate is the purchase and installation, plus three years of parts and fees, plus electricity at an editable $0.18 per kWh. For bed cooling, the membership and the power draw matter most. Only BedJet publishes power draw by mode, so the water systems’ electricity cost stays unknown.

The calculation

Eight Sleep says every Pod 6 needs an Autopilot membership, and the estimate counts three years of it12. BedJet lists no subscription, and Sleepme says its Chilipads have none45827. Chilipad 1.0, the renamed Dock Pro, needs $88 of cleaner a year for each Dock2829.

Eight Sleep gives only an output rating for the Pod 6 Hub3. Sleepme gives a 235 W maximum for the Dock Pro and no wattage for its other Chilipads4528. Neither gives a nightly run time330.

Every sleep review has a three-year estimate built the same way. Three-year cost = purchase + installation + 3 × annual consumables + 3 × annual other costs + electricity. Electricity is (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × 365 × 3 × your price per kWh.

Consumables are recurring parts such as filters, refills or a replacement sheet set. Other costs are subscriptions and memberships. The calculator starts at $0.18 per kWh, an editable assumption rather than your local rate. Use the rate on your bill if you know it.

Enter zero only when a cost is known to be zero. A missing value leaves an incomplete subtotal, not a smaller total. Taxes, shipping, financing and resale value are left out unless you add them.

A worked example

These made-up numbers show the math, not a real product. Take a $500 purchase with $100 of installation. Add $60 a year in supplies and a $20 yearly fee. The device draws 50 W for 8 hours a day. Electricity costs $0.20 per kWh. Over three years that comes to $927.60, and $87.60 of it is electricity.

At the $0.18 default, electricity costs $78.84 instead. The total falls to $918.84. If the installation cost were unknown, the known subtotal at $0.20 would be $827.60. That’s an incomplete figure, not the full cost of owning it.

Worked example: three years at $0.20 per kWh
ItemHow it’s figuredThree years
PurchasePaid once$500.00
InstallationPaid once$100.00
Supplies3 × $60$180.00
Yearly fee3 × $20$60.00
Electricity50 W × 8 h × 365 × 3 = 438 kWh, at $0.20$87.60
TotalSum of the above$927.60

Recurring costs across the lineup

The table lists the parts, refills, memberships and power draw each review records. Bed-temperature systems come first, because that’s where recurring costs differ most. Where a maker doesn’t publish a cost, the table says so.

Bed cooling: membership, cleaner and power

Eight Sleep says every Pod 6 needs an Autopilot membership2. Standard costs $199 a year and comes with a 2-year warranty1. Enhanced costs $299 and Elite $399, and either one gets the 5-year warranty if you keep it active120. Paying monthly for Enhanced costs $25 a month, or $300 a year1.

A Pod 6 Standard Queen is $2,8992. Three years with Enhanced brings it to $3,796 before electricity. With Standard it’s $3,496, but the warranty drops to 2 years. Eight Sleep’s help center says a membership is required for the first 12 months21. The estimate keeps it for all three years, because the warranty requires an active membership20.

BedJet publishes power draw by mode, so its cooling cost can be estimated. Its own cost figure assumes 8 hours a night8. BedJet 3 cools at up to 40 W, or at most 0.32 kWh a night8. That’s about 117 kWh a year. At $0.18 per kWh, it costs at most about $21 a year. Heat mode draws 100 to 1,100 W8. BedJet doesn’t say how long the heater runs, so heating cost is unknown.

BedJet Dual Zone’s two units cool at up to 80 W combined11. That’s at most 0.64 kWh a night, or about 234 kWh a year. At $0.18 per kWh, it’s at most about $42 a year. Eight Sleep lists only the Hub’s 550 W output rating, not an average draw3. Sleepme publishes no wattage for Chilipad 2.0 or the Cube, so their electricity cost stays unknown too45.

Chilipad 1.0, the renamed Dock Pro, has no subscription27. Its manual calls for one System Cleaner packet a month for each Dock28. A 12 Pack costs $88, so that’s $88 a year per Dock29. A retailer listing says the two-sleeper kit uses two Docks, so the review budgets $176 a year31. At the $1,889 sale price for a Two Sleepers King, three years come to $2,417 before water and electricity27.

The manual lists 235 W as each Dock’s maximum rated power28. A Sleepme help article says the Dock uses about 235 W but doesn’t say for how many hours30. Without a nightly run time, the Dock Pro’s electricity cost is unknown as well.

Sheets and masks: replacement is the cost

Sheets and masks use no power and need no membership, so replacement is the main running cost. Brooklinen advises replacing sheets every two years12. At that pace, the estimate for a $169 Twin set comes to $422.50 over three years13. Parachute says daily-use sheets last about two years, and percale can give another year or so14. Replaced every three years, a $269 Pebble Queen comes to about $53815.

Cozy Earth, Manta and Nodpod give no lifespan, so their reviews budget no replacement161819. Cozy Earth’s 10-year warranty covers pilling, abnormal rips and tears, and workmanship defects16. It doesn’t apply to final-sale overstock or last-chance items16. Manta covers defects for six months, and Nodpod gives no warranty terms192223.

Boll & Branch doesn’t say how long its sheets last either. A new Bay Garden Queen set is $319, but the yearly replacement cost stays unknown32. Boll & Branch publishes no warranty for sheets. Its Limited Warranty page covers only mattresses and foundations3334.

Return fees aren’t in the estimate, but they bite if a size is wrong. Brooklinen takes $9.95 from every refund, and Parachute charges $8 for a mail-in return2425. Neither swaps sizes. Brooklinen exchanges only towels and robes, and Parachute exchanges only for another color2426. Boll & Branch gives 100 days and free return shipping on US orders of $100 or more3233. It wants the sheets back in their original condition and packaging, and it keeps the original shipping and handling charges33.

Check the size and the plan

Each review prices one size, so check the one you need. Pod 6 Standard is $2,699 for a Full and $2,999 for a King or Cal King2. Sleepme showed no price for two-sleeper Chilipad 2.0 or Cube kits, so those have no two-sided estimate yet45. Chilipad 1.0 is the exception: a Two Sleepers King or Cal King is $1,889 on sale, and the Queen was out of stock27. A Boll & Branch Queen is $319 in the Bay Garden print and $279 in solid White3235. BedJet’s Cloud Sheet, which spreads the air, adds $129 to $149 to BedJet 38.
