THE BUYING GUIDE

The best home cold plunge tubs: our picks and why

A home cold plunge tub is the cold half of contrast therapy, used on its own or between sauna sessions. This guide covers nine tubs, from a $1,149.99 ice barrel to a $16,500 stainless tub.

About this guide

The Ice Barrel 300 has no chiller, so you cool it with ice. The other eight have a chiller that holds the water at a set temperature, and five of them heat as well. Beyond that, they differ most in shape, the floor and circuit they need, the warranty on the chiller and what a return costs. Our evidence review found that cold water eases soreness after hard exercise, but routine use after lifting can blunt strength gains. So these picks are about what you get for the money, not about living longer.

Ice Barrel

Ice Barrel 300

$1,149.99US price, checked

Why this one

It's the cheapest way to start: $1,149.99 for a 77-gallon insulated barrel with a lid and cover. Shipping to the contiguous US is listed at $300, with the final cost set at checkout. It needs no outlet, circuit or plumbing.

The trade-off

Cold water depends on ice or cold weather. Ice Barrel doesn't say how much ice a fill takes or how long the water stays cold, so running costs are a guess. It weighs about 700 lb full.

More detail and alternatives

Ice Barrel says it fits most people up to 6 ft, and it has ports for adding a chiller later. The barrel carries a limited lifetime warranty on material defects.

The 30-day return policy doesn't say who pays return freight, which matters with a $300 shipping rate.

Choose the Sun Home Cold Plunge Horizontal if you'd rather not buy ice. Sun Home says its chiller holds the water anywhere from 32°F to 104°F, and it's $4,099 with free shipping. It needs a dedicated 15 A GFCI circuit, and the warranty is one year.

Sun Home

Cold Plunge Horizontal

$4,099US price, checked

Why this one

At $4,099 with free shipping, it's the cheapest tub here with a chiller, and it heats too. Sun Home says the 1 HP chiller runs from 32°F to 104°F. You lie back in an inflatable tub that weighs 15.5 lb empty, and there's no plumbing.

The trade-off

The warranty lasts one year, with labor and shipping covered only for the first 90 days. You can return it only unopened, and Sun Home keeps 25% plus shipping both ways.

More detail and alternatives

It uses a standard plug, as long as the outlet is on a dedicated 15 A GFCI circuit.

It doesn't publish a cooling rate or power draw. Filters run about $425 a year if you change one every 2 weeks. The manual also asks for a full water change every 2 to 3 weeks.

Choose Plunge Air if you want the option to send it back after trying it. Plunge's FAQ says you can return it within 30 days for a full refund, though another answer says some conditions may apply. It costs $1,391 more at $5,490, stops at 39°F and doesn't heat in the Cold Only version. The tub is covered for only 90 days, and only while it stays connected to Plunge's app.

Our upright pick
Nordic Wave Viking Premier Cold Plunge, manufacturer product image

Nordic Wave

Viking Premier Cold Plunge

$5,990US price, checked

Why this one

It's an upright tub that stands on 36 × 30 in of floor. Nordic Wave says the 0.8 HP chiller runs from 35°F to 104°F, with the heater included. It plugs into a standard 120 V outlet with no electrical upgrades, and setup is plug-and-play.

The trade-off

There's no seat, so you squat or stand. The chiller is covered for only a year, and a chiller repair costs a flat $250 in shipping.

More detail and alternatives

Freight is free in the continental US, and the tub is covered for 5 years. It was $5,990 on sale, against a $6,990 regular price. Nordic Wave's store listing still shows $6,990, so confirm the price at checkout.

You get 15 days to ask for a return, and every return costs 20% of what you paid. Nordic Wave publishes no power draw or amperage. Filters go in monthly, at about $60 to $80 a year.

Choose the Ice Barrel 300 if your small spot has no outlet, or you don't want to pay for a chiller yet. It's 35.5 in wide, needs no power and costs $1,149.99 plus $300 shipping. You cool it with ice, and it fits most people only up to 6 ft.

Renu Therapy Cold Stoic 3.0, manufacturer product image

Renu Therapy

Cold Stoic 3.0

$11,399US price, checked

Why this one

If you want a hard tub that chills and heats, it comes down to the Renu or the Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0. The inflatable Sun Home Horizontal heats too, for $4,099. The Renu runs from 37°F to 104°F, Renu says.

The trade-off

It's $11,399, plus $400 for the insulated spa cover. The chiller is covered for only one year.

More detail and alternatives

It's the only tub here with a published average power draw: 130 W over 24 hours holding 40°F. You can return it for any reason within 45 days, for 5% plus shipping. Covered parts other than the chiller get a 5-year warranty.

Renu's manual gives cooling of 1.5 to 3°F an hour, so a 70°F fill takes roughly 10 to 20 hours to reach 40°F. Delivery is curbside, and you move the 365 lb tub off the pallet yourself.

Choose the Brainpod 2.0 if colder water, faster cooling and delivery into your room matter more than a trial. It's $10,990 and runs from 32°F to 107°F, and Polar Monkeys' user guide gives 2 to 6°F an hour of cooling. The warranty is 2 years. But you can return it only if it's never been filled or plugged in, and that costs 25%.

THE REASONS BEHIND THE PICKS

What matters.
And what doesn't.

Five things decide these picks: ice or a chiller, the space and power you have, whether you want heat, the warranty, and what a return costs. We don't rank tubs by the recovery, sleep, mood or longevity benefits their pages advertise. Speed and efficiency claims without a figure don't count, and neither do comparison tables a brand wrote about its rivals. An HSA/FSA eligible badge isn't a reason to buy one tub over another, so ask your plan before counting on pre-tax money. Temperatures and cooling rates are the makers' own figures, not measurements.

01Ice or chiller

This is the biggest price split. The Ice Barrel 300 costs $1,149.99 because it has no chiller: you cool it with ice. The cheapest tub here with a chiller is the Sun Home Horizontal at $4,099. Among the chilled tubs, stated lows run from 28°F on the Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro to 41°F on the BlueCube C1. Stated cooling runs from 1.5 to 3°F an hour in Renu's manual to 10 to 12°F an hour on the Plunge All-In. That's how long you wait after every fresh fill.

What to checkWith ice, plan where you'll buy and store it, since Ice Barrel doesn't say how much a fill takes. With a chiller, note whose cooling figure it is, and expect hours, not minutes, to cool a new fill.

02Upright or lay-down

The Viking Premier stands on 36 × 30 in and has no seat, so you squat or stand. The Ice Barrel 300 takes 35.5 × 35.5 in. The other tubs that publish a size run 61 to 78.7 in long. The Sun Home Horizontal, Plunge Air and Brainpod also have a separate chiller that needs its own floor space. Only three makers give a fit height: about 6 ft for the Ice Barrel, 6 ft 2 in for the Brainpod Standard and 6 ft 9 in for the All-In. Published filled weights run from 700 lb (Ice Barrel) to about 1,155 lb (Renu). Sun Home and BlueCube don't publish one.

What to checkMeasure the delivery route and the spot, including chiller clearances. Confirm the floor or deck can carry the filled weight, and check the fit height if you're over 6 ft.

03Cold only, or hot and cold

Beside a sauna, a cold-only tub covers the cold half of a contrast routine. If you also want warm soaks, five tubs here heat as standard. The Sun Home Horizontal ($4,099) and Viking Premier ($5,990 on sale) are the cheapest. The Brainpod 2.0, Renu and BlueCube C1 cost $10,990 to $16,500. Plunge sells heated versions of its two tubs for about $400 to $500 more. The Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro doesn't heat, and its set range tops out at 70°F.

What to checkDecide whether you need heat before comparing prices. Few makers publish a heating rate, and Plunge and Renu are the exceptions.

04The circuit and the delivery

The Ice Barrel needs no power. Nordic Wave says the Viking Premier runs from a standard 120 V outlet with no upgrades, though it gives no amperage. Six others ask for or recommend a dedicated 15 A circuit, and the Sun Home tubs and the Brainpod also call for GFCI protection. The BlueCube C1 needs a dedicated 20 A outlet or hardwiring. Delivery runs from Polar Monkeys carrying the Brainpod into your room to curbside freight for the Renu and BlueCube. Ice Barrel lists a $300 shipping rate, with the final cost set at checkout.

What to checkHave an electrician confirm the circuit and GFCI protection before you order. Ask who moves the tub from the curb, and what that costs.

05Warranty, especially the chiller

Tub and chiller coverage often differ. The Viking Premier's tub and most of the Renu's covered parts get 5 years, but both chillers get one. Plunge Air's tub gets 90 days, and only while it stays connected to Plunge's app. The Brainpod gets 2 years, and the Ice Barrel a limited lifetime warranty on the barrel. The two stainless tubs split sharply. Sun Home covers the $14,599 Cold Plunge Pro for one year, with labor for the first 90 days. BlueCube gives the $16,500 C1 three years of parts and labor and 15 years on the tub and frame.

What to checkRead what the chiller gets, not only the headline number. Check what voids coverage: several makers exclude freeze damage, and Nordic Wave and Polar Monkeys require their own filters.

06What a return costs

A return window means little if it costs a quarter of the price. Renu charges 5% plus shipping within 45 days of delivery, the lowest stated fee here. Nordic Wave gives you 15 days and keeps a flat 20%, or $1,198 at the $5,990 sale price. Sun Home, Polar Monkeys and BlueCube keep 25% or more and take back only an unused tub. On the Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro, that fee alone is $3,649.75. Plunge and Ice Barrel offer 30 days without stating a fee.

What to checkWork out the fee in dollars before you order. If the page doesn't say who pays return freight, ask.
