What earns a place
This guide covers cold plunges for the home, sold to US buyers at a published price. Eight are chilled tubs: a tub paired with a chiller that holds a set water temperature. The ninth, the Ice Barrel 300, is an insulated barrel you cool with ice, and it’s here as the cheapest way to start13. When checked on October 13, 2026, the nine ran from $1,149.99 to $16,500813.
The chilled tubs are the Plunge Air and Plunge All-In, and Sun Home’s Cold Plunge Horizontal and Cold Plunge Pro131425. The others are the Nordic Wave Viking Premier, the Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0, the Renu Therapy Cold Stoic 3.0 and the BlueCube C1481822. Commercial units are outside the guide. Plunge, for example, sells the All-In for residential use only and offers a separate commercial model1.
We treat a cold plunge as the cold half of contrast therapy, used on its own or alternated with a home sauna. So the guide asks whether a tub can also heat. Each pick names the need it serves, its trade-off and an alternative. Picks are for different needs, not a ranking.
What we weigh
Ten questions decide the picks. Each answer comes from the maker’s own product page, online store, manual or policy, recorded with the date it was checked.
- Ice or chiller. The Ice Barrel 300 has no chiller, so cold water depends on ice or cold weather. Ice Barrel doesn’t say how much ice a fill takes or how long the water stays cold13. Every other tub here holds its own set temperature.
- Cold only, or hot and cold. The Sun Home Horizontal, Viking Premier, Brainpod 2.0, Renu and BlueCube heat as well as chill48141822. Plunge sells heat as an extra-cost option on both the All-In and the Air23. The Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro’s set range tops out at 70°F26.
- How cold, and how fast. We record the lowest stated temperature, the stated cooling rate and whose figure it is. Renu’s user manual gives 1.5 to 3°F an hour of cooling, while Plunge lists 10 to 12°F an hour for the All-In16. Nordic Wave publishes no cooling rate for the Viking Premier18.
- Shape and fit. The Viking Premier is upright on 36 × 30 in of floor, with no seat18. Where a maker gives a fit height, we record it. Ice Barrel says the 300 fits most people up to 6 ft, and Plunge says the All-In fits people up to 6 ft 9 in113.
- The circuit. Most chilled tubs here ask for or recommend a dedicated 120 V circuit. Six of them list 15 A: the two Plunge tubs, both Sun Home tubs, the Brainpod and the Renu134142426. The BlueCube needs 20 A or hardwiring8. Sun Home and Polar Monkeys want that circuit GFCI-protected142426. Nordic Wave says the Viking Premier runs from a standard outlet and gives no amperage18.
- The floor and the delivery route. Filled weight and clearances matter as much as footprint. The All-In weighs 1,150 lb full and needs at least 16 in of clearance on its fan side1. Where a maker publishes no weight, as BlueCube doesn’t for the C1, we say so rather than estimate it812. Sun Home gives no filled weight for the Horizontal, but its manual asks for a surface that can carry 3,000 lb16.
- Water care and upkeep. We note filtration, ozone, the starter supplies and the stated price and interval of refills. Sun Home sells the Pro’s filters at $49 for three and says to change one every 2 to 4 weeks27. Renu lists a 12-pack of XL filters at $165 but gives no replacement interval28. Nordic Wave sells a 6-pack of replacement filters for $39.9929. The Viking’s page says to change the filter monthly, but the filter listing says once or twice a month1829. Polar Monkeys sells cartridge packs for its standard and Pro cooling models but doesn’t say which one the Brainpod takes223031. Plunge, BlueCube and Ice Barrel give no price for replacement tub filters or water-care refills on the pages reviewed1381213. So upkeep for the Brainpod and those tubs stays unknown.
- Warranty, part by part. Tub and chiller coverage can differ by years. Renu gives 5 years on covered components other than the chiller and 1 year on the chiller11. Nordic Wave covers the Viking’s tub for 5 years and its chiller for 121. The Air’s tub gets 90 days against a year on its chiller, with coverage tied to keeping the unit connected to the app3.
- What a return costs. A 30-day window means little if a return costs a quarter of the price. BlueCube’s online store puts its restocking fee at a minimum of 25%, and its refund policy also deducts shipping89. Renu takes returns within 45 days of delivery for 5% plus shipping7. Sun Home and Polar Monkeys also keep 25% and take back only an unused tub1723. Nordic Wave keeps a flat 20% and gives you 15 days to ask20.
- Published running cost. Only Renu publishes an average power draw: 130 W over 24 hours while holding 40°F5. That makes it the only chilled tub here whose electricity use can be estimated. Polar Monkeys’ user guide rates the Brainpod’s 1.0 HP chiller at 1,120 W, and Sun Home rates its chillers at 11 or 12 A162426. Neither gives an average draw or a daily run time.
What we don’t weigh
Health claims on product pages don’t move a tub up or down. Plunge’s pages advertise 8 proven benefits of cold plunging, such as faster recovery and better sleep, without citing studies13. Our separate evidence review covers what studies of cold-water immersion show, including the cold shock risk. None of the nine product reviews includes a study of the tub itself.
We also set aside speed and efficiency claims without a figure or baseline. Plunge says the Gen 2 All-In uses 50% less energy without naming the comparison1. Sun Home calls the Horizontal’s cooling “3x faster than competitors at this price point” but gives no cooling rate1415. Brand-written comparison tables don’t count either, such as BlueCube’s page setting the C1 against Plunge, Renu Therapy and Morozko Forge10.
A figure that may belong to a different model or part isn’t carried over. Plunge rates its standard chiller at 4 to 6°F an hour and its Pro chiller at 8 to 10°F an hour3. It doesn’t say which one ships with the Air’s Cold Only version, so the Air’s cooling rate stays unknown3.
HSA/FSA badges don’t count. Ice Barrel, Nordic Wave and Polar Monkeys call their tubs HSA/FSA eligible, and Sun Home offers HSA/FSA as a way to pay13141822. Ice Barrel doesn’t explain the basis for its claim, so check with your plan before counting on pre-tax money13.
How facts are checked
Every fact in a product review cites the page it came from and the date it was checked. When a maker’s documents disagree, we record both versions. Renu’s product page lists a 12 ft cord, while its cut sheet shows both a 12 ft GFCI cord and a 9 ft standard cord45. The page and cut sheet give about 1,155 lb filled, and the user manual about 1,165 lb46. Sun Home’s spec card and manual give the Horizontal 128 gallons, while its store description says 80 to 901416. A figure that isn’t published is recorded as not stated by the manufacturer, never as zero.
None of the eight chilled tubs’ makers cites an electrical safety listing such as ETL, UL or CSA on the pages reviewed13481418222526. Renu’s manual says only that the equipment complies with industry norms and meets legal equipment safety requirements6. The Ice Barrel 300 has no electrical parts without a chiller13. We haven’t confirmed a listing in any certifier’s public database either, so each tub’s listing is recorded as unknown, not as a pass or a failure.
How prices are checked
Prices are US prices for the exact variant on the official product page or the maker’s online store on the check date, before tax and shipping. A sale is labeled as a sale. The All-In’s $7,990 was a Fall Plunge Sale price against a $9,990 full price, with no end date stated12. Plunge says that $2,000 off is applied automatically1. Nordic Wave’s page showed the Viking Premier at $5,990, a sale price against $6,990, with no code or end date18. Its store listing still priced it at $6,990, so we use the sale price and say to confirm it at checkout19.
Checkout codes aren’t deducted, such as the $1,000-off code in a banner on BlueCube’s product page12. Options are priced separately, such as Renu’s $400 insulated spa cover4. Shipping isn’t in the price or the three-year estimate, but we note it when a maker charges it. Ice Barrel, for example, lists a $300 shipping rate to the contiguous US and sets the final cost at checkout13.
Delivery is part of the check. Curbside freight leaves the last move to you, as with Renu’s free curbside delivery of a 365 lb tub4. Plunge’s optional in-home delivery places the All-In on the first level without setting it up or connecting it to power1. Polar Monkeys includes white-glove delivery that carries the Brainpod into the room you choose22.
The three-year estimate adds the purchase, installation, three years of consumables and other recurring costs, and electricity at an editable $0.18 per kWh. Unknown items are left out of an incomplete subtotal, not counted as zero. For the Renu, the cut sheet’s 130 W average over 24 hours works out to about 1,139 kWh a year5. At $0.18 per kWh, that’s about $205 a year. Renu doesn’t state the ambient temperature, cover use or test method behind that figure5. For the Sun Home Pro, a filter every 2 weeks comes to about $425 a year27.
What we don’t do
These limits apply to every cold plunge review and pick.
- We don’t give scores, star ratings or a single overall winner.
- We don’t rank by recovery, sleep, mood or longevity claims, and we don’t give medical advice. Renu’s own manual warns that cold therapy can be dangerous for people with certain health conditions and that prolonged immersion may lead to hypothermia6. It says pregnant users should consult a physician first and that the tub isn’t designed for anyone under 186.
- We don’t count an unknown cost as zero, or carry one model’s figure over to another.
- We don’t present a sale price as a list price or deduct checkout codes.
