HOW WE CHOOSE

How we choose bed cooling systems, sheets and sleep masks

Our picks for bed cooling systems, sheets and sleep masks start with bed temperature. Seven of the 13 products in the guide heat or cool the bed, so they get the most attention here. The rest are four sheet sets and two eye masks. This page explains what earns a product a place, what decides one pick over another, what we leave out and how prices are checked.

The bottom line

Bed-temperature systems come first, judged on air or water, cooling in your room, one side or two, ongoing costs, power, fit and warranty. Sheets and masks are judged on fit, care, certification and return terms. Health claims, seller star ratings and HSA/FSA badges don’t move a product up or down.

What earns a place

The guide covers bed-temperature systems, sheets and eye masks sold to US buyers. Each pick names the need it serves, its trade-off and an alternative. Picks are for different needs, not a ranking. These are comfort products, and none of them diagnoses or treats a sleep disorder.

Seven products heat or cool the bed. BedJet 3 and BedJet Dual Zone blow air into your bedding from a unit beside or under the bed12. Eight Sleep’s Pod and Sleepme’s Chilipad 2.0 and Chilipad Cube run water through a cover or pad on the mattress35. The other two are Eight Sleep Pod 5 Core and Sleepme Dock Pro. Eight Sleep’s Pod page now sells only Pod 63. So the Pod 5 Core review takes its price from Pod 6 Standard, the closest current match. Sleepme now sells the Dock Pro as Chilipad 1.0, next to Chilipad 2.0, while supplies last28. Its review prices the Two Sleepers King. The Queen was out of stock28.

The rest are four sheet sets and two eye masks. The sheets are Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed, Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Core, Cozy Earth Bamboo and Parachute Percale. The masks are the Manta PRO and the Nodpod. An eye mask blocks light but can’t cool the bed. Parachute and Cozy Earth pitch their sheets to hot sleepers but cite no study or lab result67.

Bed cooling systems: what we weigh

Seven questions decide the temperature picks. Each answer comes from the maker’s product page, manual or policy, recorded with the date it was checked.

  • Air or water. BedJet’s air systems put no water pad and no electricity in the bed1. Water systems add upkeep. Sleepme says Chilipad 2.0 takes distilled water but gives no reservoir size or refill schedule4. The Dock Pro manual calls for a System Cleaner packet and a water top-off each month per Dock29. A 12 Pack of cleaner was $88, shown against $9631.
  • How cold, in your room. Eight Sleep lists 55°F to 110°F for each side of the Pod3. Sleepme lists 55°F to 115°F for Chilipad 2.0 and Chilipad 1.0428. BedJet lists 66°F to 109°F, but the low end depends on your bedroom1. BedJet says it can’t replace air conditioning in rooms above 79°F1. Sleepme’s FAQ says the Cube cools the bed about 10°F below room air, so its “as low as 60°F” needs a cool room5.
  • One side or two. BedJet Dual Zone gives each sleeper a unit and a separate air chamber in the sheet28. Pod 6 Standard sets each side separately3. The Chilipad 2.0 and Cube kits we review cover one side, and Sleepme showed no price for two-sleeper versions of either45. Chilipad 1.0 is priced as a Two Sleepers King with two zones, at $1,889 on sale28.
  • What you keep paying. Every Pod 6 needs an Autopilot membership, which costs $199 to $399 a year910. Its 5-year warranty needs a plan of $299 or more, kept active1011. BedJet lists no subscription, and Sleepme says Chilipad 2.0, Chilipad 1.0 and the Cube have no subscription fees14528.
  • Power and noise. BedJet publishes draw by mode. BedJet 3 draws up to 40 W when cooling and 100 to 1,100 W when heating1. Eight Sleep lists the Hub’s 550 W output, which isn’t an average draw3. Sleepme publishes no wattage for Chilipad 2.0 or the Cube45. The Dock Pro manual lists 235 W as each Dock’s maximum rated power29. A Sleepme help article says it uses about 235 W but gives no nightly run time30. None of these makers gives a decibel figure1528.
  • Room under and on the bed. BedJet 3 fits under a bed with 6 in of clearance1. The Pod 6 Hub is 7.87 in tall, and the Cube fits under frames with 8 in or more35. Chilipad 2.0 fits mattresses 10 to 16 in tall4. The Dock Pro manual asks for 6 in of clearance around the Dock’s front grille and back vent29.
  • Trial and warranty. Comfort is personal, so the return window matters. BedJet takes returns for 60 days and gives a 2-year warranty112. Pod 6 has a 30-night trial13. Chilipad 2.0 also has a 30-night trial and a 2-year warranty4. The Cube’s warranty is 1 year5. Chilipad 1.0 has a 30-night trial and a 1-year warranty28.

Sheets and masks: what we weigh

For sheets, we check the fiber and weave, how deep a mattress the fitted sheet takes, the care rules and the return terms. Brooklinen and Parachute fit mattresses up to 16 in deep1415. Boll & Branch’s Signature Hemmed set fits up to 17 in32. Cozy Earth’s fitted pocket is 18 in, and Cozy Earth says it stretches to 207.

A wrong size costs money. Brooklinen takes $9.95 from every refund, and Parachute charges $8 for a mail-in return1617. Boll & Branch takes returns for 100 days, but only in the original condition and packaging33. It publishes no warranty for sheets, since its Limited Warranty page covers only mattresses and foundations3334.

We record a textile certificate number when the maker gives one. Brooklinen and Parachute name OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificates, while Cozy Earth claims the label without a number6714. Boll & Branch names certificate 18.HUS.4024032. It also says the set is GOTS certified and made in a Fair Trade Certified factory, with no certificate number for either32. OEKO-TEX says the label means every thread, button and accessory was tested against over 1,000 harmful substances18. It’s a harmful-substance test, so it says nothing about softness, durability or warmth.

For masks, we check fit, light blocking, care and cover. The Manta PRO has eye cups you slide into place and a strap that sits above your ears19. Manta covers defects for six months20. The Nodpod is a 9 oz strip of bead-filled pods with no strap, and Nodpod gives no warranty terms2122.

Where the facts come from

Every sleep review is built from the sources it cites: maker pages and policies, certifier listings and published studies. Prices are checked on the date shown.

What we don’t weigh

Sleep claims on product pages don’t move a product up or down. Eight Sleep says the Pod gives “34% more deep sleep, clinically proven”23. Its footnote cites internal study data, with no sample size or published paper23. BedJet cites a survey of 1,281 of its own owners and claims clinically proven results without naming a study1. Manta’s comparison table says the PRO boosts REM and deep sleep, with no study cited19.

Our evidence review covers what studies of bed temperature and eye masks show. A study of one product, or of masks in general, isn’t carried over to a model it didn’t test.

Payment badges and seller ratings don’t count either. BedJet, Sleepme and Cozy Earth offer HSA or FSA payment, which is a way to pay, not evidence of a health effect4724. Star averages shown by the seller, such as Manta’s 4.7 from 1,984 reviews, aren’t independent19. Sleepme’s “No EMFs in Your Bed” line comes with no measurement, so we set it aside4.

How facts are checked

Every fact in a review cites the page it came from and the date it was checked. When a maker’s pages disagree, we record both. Brooklinen’s product description says 495 thread count, while the comparison chart on its product page lists 4801425. BedJet’s Dual Zone page asks for 5 in of under-bed clearance, and the manual says 6 in226. Nodpod’s product FAQ calls the mask completely light-blocking, but its main FAQ says the Bone color lets a little light through2122. Boll & Branch’s product page gives a 17-inch pocket, but its size guide lists the Twin fitted sheet at 15 in3235.

A certificate counts once it matches the certifier’s record. OEKO-TEX’s Label Check is a search form. None of the numbers given by Boll & Branch, Brooklinen or Parachute could be confirmed there6142732. BedJet says its units are UL certified but gives no file number1. So those listings are recorded as unconfirmed, not as a pass or a fail. A figure a maker doesn’t publish is recorded as not stated, never as zero.

How prices are checked

Prices are US prices for the exact size and variant, taken from the maker’s page or online store on a stated date. They’re before tax and shipping. A sale is labeled as one. BedJet 3 was $498 against an original $6991. The Cube was $719 against a $799 list price5. Chilipad 1.0 was $1,889 in a warehouse sale, against $2,69928. Pod 6 Standard showed no sale, so its $2,899 Queen price counts as list39.

Size changes the price, so each review names the size it prices. A Brooklinen Twin is $169 and a Queen is $20925. Prints can cost more. A Boll & Branch Queen is $319 in the Bay Garden print and $279 in solid White3236. Pod 6 Standard runs from $2,699 for a Full to $2,999 for a King9. Coupons, sign-up discounts and HSA or FSA savings aren’t deducted.

Accessories and memberships are named, not hidden. BedJet’s Cloud Sheet, which spreads the air, costs $129 to $149 on top of the unit1. Eight Sleep’s page shows $3,198 for Pod 6 because it adds a year of Autopilot Enhanced at $2993. The three-year estimate on each review adds the purchase, installation and three years of recurring costs. Electricity goes in at an editable $0.18 per kWh. A cost that isn’t published leaves the total incomplete rather than counting as zero.

What we don’t do

These limits apply to every sleep review and pick.

  • We don’t give scores, star ratings or a single overall winner.
  • We don’t rank by sleep scores, recovery or longevity claims, and we don’t give medical advice. Nodpod says it knows of no studies in people with eye-pressure conditions such as glaucoma, and it advises asking a physician first21.
  • We don’t count an unknown cost as zero, or carry one model’s figure or certificate over to another.
  • We don’t present a sale price as a list price or deduct coupons.
