The verdict

BodyScan 2 adds a handle display and a blood oxygen sensor to a smart scale that reports fat and muscle for six body zones and a 6-lead ECG. It suits you if you want one weigh-in to cover body composition, ECG and SpO2. The catch: its 99% DEXA figure comes from Withings' study of the earlier Body Scan, and no independent validation was found.

The trade-off

It costs $599.95, its DEXA figure comes from a study of the earlier Body Scan, and the newest scores and Apple Health sync for new accounts need Withings+.

About this price

List price for the black BodyScan 2 on Withings' US store, shown in US dollars on Oct 24, 2026. Withings' product listing gives the same amount, in stock, with no sale price or crossed-out regular price. The page also lists a Withings+ yearly plan with its first month free next to the scale, with no charge at order. That plan is optional, renews automatically at $99.50 a year unless you cancel in the app, and isn't included. The page says free shipping and returns, but the refund policy says you pay return shipping after a withdrawal. Tax is extra. The earlier Body Scan is a separate review.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want fat and muscle readings by body zone, an ECG function and blood oxygen from one scale.

  • You want separate fat and muscle readings by body zone, not one whole-body figure
  • You want a 6-lead ECG and a blood oxygen reading on the bathroom scale, and you'll complete the US cardiologist-review activation
  • You want one scale for up to 8 people with Wi-Fi sync and a rechargeable battery

THINK TWICE IF

  • You wear a pacemaker, ICD or other implanted electronic device: Withings says not to use the device, or to turn off body composition in the app
  • You're pregnant and want body-fat readings: Withings says pregnant people should not use the device or should turn the feature off in the app
  • You need body-fat accuracy that an independent study has confirmed, since the 99% DEXA figure comes from Withings' own study of the earlier Body Scan
  • You want Heart Age or Glucose Resilience without a subscription, since both need Withings+
  • You want to set the scale up from a computer, which the Withings app doesn't allow
What still needs checking
  • Any BodyScan 2 comparison with DEXA. Withings' 99% figure is from its internal study of the earlier Body Scan, with no bias or limits of agreement on the pages checked
  • Whether an independent study has compared the BodyScan 2's body composition with DEXA (none turned up in a Europe PMC search on Oct 24, 2026)
  • Whether the FDA counts the 2023 Scan Monitor 2.0 clearance (K230812) as covering the BodyScan 2, since its summary names the Body Scan
  • Whether Glucose Resilience, which Withings' FAQ of Jul 12, 2026 marks as coming soon, is live yet, and which other listed features are
  • The terms of Withings' 2-year quality guarantee in the US
  • Whether returns are free, and whether the 30 days count from receipt or purchase, since Withings' pages disagree
  • Whether the scale has 12 electrodes (the product page and FAQ) or 8 (one support article)
  • The handle display size, which Withings gives as 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5 in
  • Whether Bluetooth sync works yet, and which modes are live
  • Charging power draw

Is the Withings BodyScan 2 accurate?

Withings says its fat-mass readings correlate at least 99% with DEXA, but the footnote credits an internal comparison of the earlier Body Scan, not the BodyScan 2115. The pages checked give no bias or error range15.

No independent study of the BodyScan 2 was found. An independent test of an earlier Withings scale found its fat-mass readings a median of 3.7 kg low against DEXA26.

Does the Withings BodyScan 2 need a subscription?

Not for the basics. Withings says your data stays free in its app, and Withings+ is optional118.

Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year17. Heart Age and Glucose Resilience need it13. Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 also need an active Withings+ subscription to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other apps18.

Is the Withings BodyScan 2 FDA cleared?

Not by name. The FDA’s database lists no clearance named BodyScan 22122. Withings says the scale’s US ECG function is called Scan Monitor 2.0, the name of a 2023 FDA clearance, K2308121223.

That FDA summary describes a smart scale with a handle and names the Body Scan as its hardware, not the BodyScan 223. It covers the ECG function only, not body composition, SpO2 or vascular age23.

Can you use the Withings BodyScan 2 with a pacemaker?

Withings says not for body composition. Its segmental body composition guide says people with pacemakers, ICDs or other implanted electronic devices must not use that function5. Its BIA guide recommends they not use the device or turn the feature off in the app6.

Withings gives the same advice for pregnant people6. Its Blood Pressure Insights notifications aren’t recommended with an implanted electronic device1.

How is the Withings BodyScan 2 different from the Body Scan?

Withings says the BodyScan 2 measures 60+ biomarkers against 40+ on the Body Scan, and uses 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz against 3 up to 250 kHz3.

It adds a handle display with touch electrodes, an SpO2 sensor, Heart Age and Glucose Resilience, and a new Blood Pressure Insights score in the US3. Both scales include a 6-lead ECG3.

The practical details.

Specifications for Withings BodyScan 2
Exact variantBodyScan 2 with retractable handle and handle display, black, Wi-Fi, rechargeable
Body composition methodMulti-frequency bioimpedance spectroscopy at 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz, against 3 frequencies up to 250 kHz on the earlier Body Scan, per Withings. It uses 12 electrodes, 8 in the platform and 4 in the handle, so the current runs from hands to feet. It reports fat and muscle for six body zones (arms, legs, torso and abdomen). Whole-body readings are body fat %, body water %, muscle mass, bone mass, visceral fat index and basal metabolic rate
WeighingFour weight sensors. Range 9 to 440 lb (5 to 200 kg) in 0.1 lb (50 g) steps. Units: kg, lb and st lb
ECG, SpO2 and cardiovascular features6-lead ECG recorded over 30 seconds while you stand on the scale and hold the handle. SpO2 from a light sensor under your left thumb, which Withings calls a wellness feature. Also standing heart rate, pulse wave velocity, vascular age and a Nerve Response Score from the foot electrodes. In the US, Blood Pressure Insights notifications are a wellness score that Withings says doesn't measure your blood pressure
Scan modesA Daily Scan takes about 30 seconds and covers weight, segmental body composition, heart rate and pulse wave velocity by default. A Longevity Scan takes about 2 minutes, is offered every 7 days and adds ECG, SpO2, vascular age and the Nerve Response Score. Body composition, SpO2, ECG and Heart and Vascular Age need the handle. Without it you still get weight, BMI, pulse wave velocity and the Nerve Response Score
Users and modesRecognizes up to 8 users. The product page lists Athlete and Baby modes and says Pregnancy and Eyes Closed modes are coming, while a support article lists Weight-Only, Athlete and Pregnancy modes. Body composition is only available to people 16 or older
Connectivity and appWi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The product page lists Bluetooth as coming soon, but Withings' installation guide pairs the scale over Bluetooth and offers a Bluetooth-only option. Needs the Withings app on iOS 18 or later, or Android 12 or later. Stores up to 16 readings when it can't sync
DisplayA 640 x 172 pixel color LCD in the handle, with two thumb buttons. Withings gives its size as 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5 in on different pages
Battery and chargingBuilt-in rechargeable 3.7 V, 2,500 mAh lithium-ion battery that Withings says lasts up to 1 year per charge. A full charge takes up to 5 hours over the USB cable provided, and you can't use the scale while it charges
Features that need Withings+Heart Age and Glucose Resilience need a Withings+ subscription. Withings' FAQ of Jul 12, 2026 marks Glucose Resilience as coming soon, and the product page says feature availability depends on software updates. The product page's Withings+ box lists ECG cardiologist reviews, with 4 included. Baseline data and trends stay free
Dimensions12.8 x 14.1 x 0.7 in (325 x 357 x 18.5 mm), per Withings' product page. The page's comparison chart gives a total weight of 7.5 lb for the BodyScan 2. The weighing capacity is 440 lb (200 kg).
MaterialsA reinforced aluminum chassis with a large glass platform, per Withings' product page, which calls the platform both high-strength tempered glass and ITO glass. It lists 12 integrated electrodes: 8 ITO electrodes and 4 stainless steel electrodes. The handle's materials are not stated by the manufacturer. The box holds the BodyScan 2, a USB-C cable and a quick installation guide.

Before you buy

InstallationNo installation

No installation. You set it up in the Withings app, with Bluetooth on, location permission and your Wi-Fi password. The app pairs the scale with a 6-digit code and then connects it to Wi-Fi. Withings recommends Wi-Fi, and says a scale set up without it loses most of its functions. It can't be set up from a computer. In the US, the ECG function needs its own activation. You give your state and a US phone number, and a board-certified cardiologist reviews your first ECG at no added cost. Withings says that US activation is for scales bought from a US retailer or online store.

Warranty2-year quality guarantee, per Withings' product page

2-year quality guarantee, per Withings' product page. The US store's terms of sale describe legal warranties under French law. They give no US warranty terms, so conditions, exclusions and claim steps weren't confirmed.

Returns30 days from receipt, per Withings' refund policy

30 days from receipt, per Withings' refund policy. One clause counts the 30 days from receipt and another from the purchase date. You start the return from your Withings account, print the label and send back the product with all its original items. The product page says free shipping and returns, but the policy says you pay return shipping after a withdrawal, so check the label cost first. Refunds go to the original payment method. Withings+ payments already made are non-refundable, with an exception if you weren't told about automatic renewal.

More about this assessment

BodyScan 2 is Withings' newest handle-equipped smart scale, and Withings lists it at $599.95. Its handle holds electrodes, a color display and a blood oxygen (SpO2) sensor. Withings says it measures at 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz, against 3 up to 250 kHz on the earlier Body Scan. It reports fat and muscle for six body zones, a 6-lead ECG and vascular age. The 99% DEXA figure on its page comes from Withings' internal study of the earlier Body Scan, and no independent study of the BodyScan 2 was found. The FDA's database lists no clearance named BodyScan 2. Withings says the US ECG function is called Scan Monitor 2.0, the name of a 2023 FDA clearance that describes the Body Scan. Withings says people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices must not use the body composition function. Baseline data is free, but Heart Age and Glucose Resilience need Withings+. Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need Withings+ to send data to Apple Health.

Strengths on paper

  • Twelve electrodes in the platform and handle, and 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz, against 3 up to 250 kHz on the earlier Body Scan, per Withings
  • Adds a handle display and an SpO2 sensor to the features of the earlier Body Scan, per Withings' FAQ
  • Rechargeable battery that Withings says lasts up to 1 year per charge
  • Baseline data and trends are free in the Withings app, and Withings+ is optional
  • Withings lists a 2-year quality guarantee and a 30-day return window

Limitations

  • Costs $599.95
  • Withings' 99% DEXA figure comes from an internal study of the earlier Body Scan, not the BodyScan 2, and the page says individual results may vary
  • No independent validation of the BodyScan 2's body composition was found
  • Heart Age and Glucose Resilience need Withings+, and Withings' FAQ of Jul 12, 2026 marked Glucose Resilience as coming soon
  • Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need Withings+ to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other apps
  • Withings says people with pacemakers, ICDs or other implanted devices must not use the body composition function. It says pregnant people should not use the device or should turn it off
  • US ECG activation needs your state of residence, a US phone number and a purchase from a US store, and 6-lead recordings show only in the mobile apps
  • Withings says AFib detection is for adults and isn't recommended for people with other known arrhythmias
  • Withings changed its body-fat calculation in two firmware updates, and says your fat percentage may shift for a few measurements after an update
  • Withings' pages disagree on the handle display size and on whether Bluetooth works yet
  • Needs iOS 18 or later, or Android 12 or later, and can't be set up from a computer

PLAN YOUR OWNERSHIP COSTS

Change the assumptions to fit your use. Leave an unknown cost blank. Add water, subscriptions, cleaning, shipping and taxes if they apply. Use average operating power, not the maximum rating.

3-year known subtotal

Incomplete: energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That doesn’t mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • Purchase is the $599.95 list price on Oct 24, 2026, before tax.
  • Other annual costs are $0 because Withings says your data stays free and Withings+ is optional. Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, which would add $298.50 over three years on the annual plan. That isn't counted.
  • Heart Age and Glucose Resilience need Withings+, so add the subscription if you want them. Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 also need an active Withings+ subscription to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other third-party apps.
  • Annual consumables are $0 because the battery is rechargeable and Withings lists no refills. That leaves out battery wear and out-of-warranty repairs. Withings doesn't state the charger's power draw, so energy is unknown.

Evidence & sources.

Are smart scales worth it? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimPrice, specs, modes, battery, connectivity and the 2-year quality guarantee come from Withings' US product page, store listing and support pages. Withings' FAQ lists a US release date of Jul 20, 2026.1416 Manufacturer information, not independent testing. The pages disagree on some details: the handle display size, whether Bluetooth works yet, which modes are live and the electrode count.
  • Regulator recordFDA's openFDA 510(k) data (last updated Oct 12, 2026) list eight records with Withings as the applicant, and none is named BodyScan 2. Withings says the ECG function of BodyScan 2 is called Scan Monitor 2.0 in the US. That is the name of K230812, cleared Aug 23, 2023 (Class II, electrocardiograph, 21 CFR 870.2340). Its summary describes a smart scale with a retractable handle and names the Body Scan as the scale hardware. The indications say it records, stores and transfers lead II and lead III of a two-channel ECG. It calculates leads I, aVR, aVF and aVL and displays ECG rhythms. It detects the presence of atrial fibrillation "when the monitor is prescribed or used under care of a physician." It is intended for adult patients in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and homes.122123 The clearance covers the ECG function only. It doesn't cover body composition, SpO2, vascular age or the Nerve Response Score. The summary dates from March 2023 and doesn't name the BodyScan 2, so whether it covers the new hardware wasn't confirmed. The BodyScan 2 page says AFib detection comes through Withings ECG Monitor 2, a software medical device with a CE certification dated Apr 14, 2026. It also says the BodyScan 2 is not a medical device for diagnostic purposes. openFDA lists no record with the ECG Monitor 2 name. A database search isn't proof that no listing exists. A clearance isn't a finding that the scale improves health.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings' BodyScan 2 page says its fat-mass readings correlate at least 99% with DEXA in internal testing. The footnote credits an internal comparison of the earlier Body Scan with DEXA. It adds that individual results may vary and that the BodyScan 2 is not a medical device for diagnostic purposes. Withings' support site describes that comparison as a 2025 study of 80 people with the sports-health center Mon Stade. Each had one DEXA scan and three Body Scan measurements. It reports r = 0.99 for total fat mass, 0.98 for lean mass and total muscle mass, and 0.95 for total water mass.1415 This is Withings' own report on the earlier model, not a peer-reviewed paper and not a BodyScan 2 result. Withings' BodyScan 2 segmental FAQ answers the DEXA question by linking to this Body Scan article. The pages checked give no bias or limits of agreement.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings has released two BodyScan 2 firmware updates that changed the body composition calculation. Version 1731 is for users with a low fat percentage, and version 1781 is for low-fat users in Athlete Mode. Withings says your fat percentage may change for a few measurements and then stabilize.2425 These are Withings' release notes. They give no accuracy figure.
  • Published studyA 2021 observational study at a French hospital compared three consumer smart scales with DEXA in patients referred for a scan. One was the Withings Body Cardio, an earlier Withings model, used by 48 patients. Its median fat-mass error was 3.7 kg too low. The middle half of errors ran from 8.0 kg too low to 0.3 kg too high. The median weight error was 0.25 kg. The authors concluded that smart scales aren't accurate for body composition and shouldn't replace DEXA in patient care.26 The study didn't test the BodyScan 2, which adds a handle and more frequencies, so these figures don't describe it. They show how far a Withings scale of an earlier generation was from DEXA on fat mass.
  • Published studyA 2023 laboratory study of 73 healthy adults aged 19 to 50 compared 15 body-fat devices, 14 of them consumer-grade, with a four-compartment reference model. Average errors ranged from 3.5 percentage points too low to 11.7 points too high, and the standard error of the estimate ranged from 3.1 to 7.5 points. The authors said select octapolar and foot-to-foot devices may be useful for tracking body composition over time.27 The BodyScan 2 wasn't in the study, so the figures don't describe it. A device can be consistent and still consistently wrong.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says the current used for body composition is a very low voltage that it considers safe for general use. It recommends that pregnant people and people with pacemakers, ICDs or other implanted electronic devices not use the device or turn the feature off in the app. Its segmental body composition article says people with pacemakers, ICDs or other implanted electronic devices must not use this function. Withings says the Blood Pressure Insights notifications are for people 22 or older and aren't recommended with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker.156 This is Withings' own safety guidance, not a clinical finding. No BodyScan 2 safety FAQ turned up, so Withings' advice on stents or other metal implants for this model wasn't found.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings calls SpO2 on the BodyScan 2 a wellness (non-medical) feature that is not intended to diagnose or treat any medical condition. It calls Heart Age a long-term monitoring indicator, not a diagnosis. It says Blood Pressure Insights notifications give a wellness insight, are not a diagnosis and don't measure your blood pressure. It says to confirm any notification with a clinically validated blood pressure monitor.1314 These are Withings' own descriptions. Withings' FAQ of Jul 12, 2026 marked Glucose Resilience as coming soon.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says your data stays free in its app and Withings+ is optional. Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, with a one-month free trial, and bills automatically after the trial. It adds extras such as an ECG review by a cardiologist within 24 hours. Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription to export data to Apple Health, Health Connect and similar apps. Older accounts are unaffected.11718 Withings says you keep direct access to your data whatever your subscription status.
