Withings Body Smart

Withings smart scale that reads body composition through the feet, $129.95

Our founder, Porsche Ma, has used this one. Like every review here, it rests on published sources, not hands-on testing. Our method

Porsche also cofounded Superhuman Chambers, which sells hyperbaric chambers · About the author. This is general information, not medical advice, and no clinician has reviewed it.

The verdict

Body Smart reads body composition and standing heart rate through the foot platform and syncs over Wi-Fi to the Withings app. It suits you if you want Withings' app and sync without the Body Scan's handle and ECG. The catch: Withings gives no accuracy figure for it, and new accounts need Withings+ to sync to Apple Health. If you want the handle, five-zone readings and an ECG, look at the Withings Body Scan.

The trade-off

It reads through the feet only, Withings publishes no accuracy figure for it, and some people must switch off its body-fat readings.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want Withings' app, Wi-Fi sync and body composition readings from a scale without a handle or ECG.

  • You want Withings' app and Wi-Fi sync with fat, muscle and water readings from a scale without a handle
  • You want standing heart rate on the scale as well as weight
  • You want a scale for up to 8 people that runs on batteries, with no charging cable

THINK TWICE IF

  • You wear a pacemaker or another internal medical device: Withings says not to use the scale unless the body-fat and heart-rate readings are turned off
  • You're pregnant and want body-fat readings: Withings says the scale hasn't been tested or validated in pregnancy and recommends turning impedance off
  • You want fat and muscle readings for each arm and leg, or an ECG, which need the Body Scan's handle
  • You need body-fat accuracy that an independent study has confirmed, since Withings gives no figure for this scale
What still needs checking
  • Any accuracy figure or DEXA comparison for the Body Smart, since Withings gives none and no independent study was found
  • The terms of Withings' 2-year quality guarantee in the US
  • Whether returns are free, and whether the 30 days count from receipt, purchase or order, since Withings' pages disagree
  • The scale's weight, which the product page doesn't give
  • What replacement AAA batteries cost, since Withings doesn't price them
  • Which modes it has now: the product page lists Athlete, Pregnancy, Baby and Eyes Closed, while the Body Smart FAQ says pregnancy mode is still to come

Is the Withings Body Smart accurate?

Withings gives no accuracy figure or DEXA study for the Body Smart14.

Weight is the easier part: the scale reads in 0.1 lb steps1. For body fat, an independent test of an earlier Withings scale, the Body Cardio, found fat-mass readings a median of 3.7 kg low against DEXA in hospital patients12. In 73 healthy adults, the same model read 0.4 points low on average, with a wide spread between individuals13.

Does the Withings Body Smart need a subscription?

No. Withings says baseline metrics and trends stay free in its app, and Withings+ is optional17.

Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year6.

One catch for new buyers is data export. Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other apps7.

Can you use the Withings Body Smart with a pacemaker?

Withings says no: you should not use the Body Smart if you wear a pacemaker or other internal medical device3. Its small electrical signal, used for fat mass, may interfere with the device3.

Owners who want to keep the scale can use it with the fat mass and heart rate measurements turned off in the Withings app3. Withings also recommends turning impedance off in pregnancy, and says a stent doesn’t affect the measurement3.

More about this assessment

Body Smart is a Withings scale that reads body composition through electrodes in the foot platform. Withings lists it at $129.95. It reports body fat, water, muscle, bone, visceral fat and basal metabolic rate, plus standing heart rate, and syncs over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Withings gives no accuracy figure or DEXA study for it, and none from an independent group was found. It has no handle, and Withings lists no segmental readings or ECG for it. Withings says not to use it with a pacemaker or other internal medical device unless the body-fat and heart-rate readings are turned off. Baseline data is free, but accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need Withings+ to send data to Apple Health.

Strengths on paper

  • Wi-Fi sync, so readings reach the app without your phone nearby
  • Weighs in 0.1 lb steps
  • Batteries included, with an average life of 15 months according to Withings
  • Baseline data and trends are free in the Withings app, and Withings+ is optional
  • Withings says a stent doesn't affect the measurement
  • Withings lists a 2-year quality guarantee and a 30-day return window

Limitations

  • Reads through the feet only: Withings says the current runs through the lower half of the body, and it lists no handle, segmental readings or ECG
  • Withings gives no accuracy figure or DEXA study for the Body Smart
  • No independent validation of the Body Smart's body composition was found
  • Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need Withings+ to export data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other apps
  • Not for pacemakers or other internal medical devices unless the body-fat and heart-rate readings are turned off
  • Needs iOS 18 or later, or Android 12 or later, and can't be set up from a computer

PLAN YOUR OWNERSHIP COSTS

What will it cost to own?

Change the assumptions to fit your use. Leave an unknown cost blank. Add water, subscriptions, cleaning, shipping and taxes if they apply. Use average operating power, not the maximum rating.

3-year known subtotal

$129.95

Incomplete: annual consumables, energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

Recorded recurring parts and refills:

  • AAA alkaline batteries (four): price not stated, every 15 months. Withings includes the first set and gives an average battery life of 15 months. It doesn't price replacements.
  • Purchase is the $129.95 list price on Oct 23, 2026, before tax.
  • Other annual costs are $0 because Withings says baseline data and trends stay free in its app and Withings+ is optional. Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, which would add $298.50 over three years on the annual plan. That isn't counted.
  • Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription. It is required to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other third-party apps. If you need that sync, add the subscription to the cost.
  • Annual consumables are unknown. The box has four AAA cells that Withings says last an average of 15 months, but Withings doesn't price replacements. The scale is battery-powered, so energy use isn't counted.

Evidence & sources.

Are smart scales worth it? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimPrice, specs, box contents, modes, battery life, connectivity and the 2-year quality guarantee come from Withings' US product page and support pages.15 Manufacturer information, not independent testing. The product page prints the platform size but not the weight, and it gives no accuracy figure.
  • Regulator recordWithings' Body Smart page claims no FDA clearance, and FDA's 510(k) data show no clearance that covers the Body Smart.1011 A database search isn't proof that no listing exists. The only Withings-named body composition scale clearance in the database is K121971 from 2012. Its applicant is Zhongshan Transtek Electronics Co., Ltd., and it covers an earlier scale.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says you should not use the Body Smart if you wear a pacemaker or other internal medical device, because its small electrical signal may interfere. Owners who keep the scale can use it with the fat mass and heart rate measurements turned off in the app. It says stents don't affect the measurement or pose a risk. It also says the scale hasn't been tested or validated in pregnancy and recommends turning impedance off.3 This is Withings' own safety guidance, not a clinical finding. Turning off fat mass measurement turns it off for every user and account linked to the scale.
  • Published studyA 2021 observational study at a Paris hospital compared three consumer smart scales with DEXA in patients referred for a scan. One was the Withings Body Cardio, an earlier Withings model, used by 48 patients. Its median fat-mass error was 3.7 kg too low.12 The study didn't test the Body Smart, so these figures don't describe it. The authors concluded that smart scales aren't accurate for body composition and shouldn't replace DEXA in patient care.
  • Published studyA 2023 laboratory study of 73 healthy adults aged 19 to 50 compared 15 body-fat devices with a four-compartment reference model. The Withings Body Cardio read an average of 0.4 percentage points low (95% CI -1.7 to 1.0). Its total error against the reference model was 5.8 points, and the paper rated its standard error of the estimate "poor".13 The study didn't test the Body Smart. A small average error can hide larger errors for one person, which its 5.8-point total error reflects.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says baseline metrics and trends stay free in its app. Withings+ is optional and costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, with a one-month trial offered at purchase. Accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription to export data to Apple Health, Health Connect and similar apps. Older accounts are unaffected.167 Withings says you keep direct access to your data whatever your subscription status.
