Withings Body Scan

Smart scale with a handle for five-zone body composition and an ECG, $499.95

Our founder, Porsche Ma, has used this one. Like every review here, it rests on published sources, not hands-on testing. Our method

Porsche also cofounded Superhuman Chambers, which sells hyperbaric chambers · About the author. This is general information, not medical advice, and no clinician has reviewed it.

The verdict

Body Scan adds a handle to a smart scale so Withings can report fat and muscle in five body zones and a 6-lead ECG. It suits you if you want one weigh-in to cover body composition and an FDA-cleared ECG function. The catch: its DEXA match is Withings' own claim, and independent confirmation wasn't found. For a cheaper Withings scale without the handle and ECG, look at the Body Smart.

The trade-off

It costs $499.95, its DEXA match comes from Withings' own study, and some people must switch off the body composition readings.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want separate fat and muscle readings for the arms, legs and torso plus an ECG function from one scale.

  • You want separate fat and muscle readings for each arm, each leg and the torso, not one whole-body figure
  • You want an ECG function on the bathroom scale, and you'll complete the US cardiologist-review activation
  • You want one scale for up to 8 people with Wi-Fi sync and a rechargeable battery

THINK TWICE IF

  • You wear a pacemaker or another internal medical device: Withings says not to use the scale unless impedance measurement is turned off
  • You're pregnant and want body-fat readings: Withings says the scale hasn't been tested or validated in pregnancy and recommends turning impedance off
  • You need body-fat accuracy that an independent study has confirmed, since the DEXA figure comes from Withings' own study
  • You want to set the scale up from a computer, which the Withings app doesn't allow
What still needs checking
  • Bias and limits of agreement for Withings' DEXA study, which its pages don't give
  • Whether an independent study has compared the Body Scan's body composition with DEXA (none was found)
  • The terms of Withings' 2-year quality guarantee in the US
  • Whether returns are free, and whether the 30 days count from receipt or purchase, since Withings' pages disagree
  • The scale's weight, which the product page doesn't give
  • Which features besides data export need Withings+, beyond the extras Withings lists (cardiologist ECG review, Health Assistant, NutriCare and Readiness)
  • Charging power draw

Is the Withings Body Scan accurate?

Withings says it tracks DEXA closely, but the evidence is its own. An internal 2025 study of 80 people reported a correlation of 0.99 with DEXA for total fat mass56.

Withings’ own footnote says that doesn’t mean one reading will land within ±1% of DEXA6. The pages checked give no bias or error range56. An independent test of an earlier Withings scale found its fat-mass readings a median of 3.7 kg low against DEXA15.

Does the Withings Body Scan need a subscription?

No. Withings says baseline metrics and trends stay free in its app, and Withings+ is optional111.

Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, and it adds extras such as a cardiologist review of any ECG within 24 hours110.

One catch for new buyers is data export. Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other apps11.

Can you use the Withings Body Scan with a pacemaker?

Withings says no: you should not use the Body Scan if you wear a pacemaker or other internal medical device4. Its small electrical signal, used for fat mass, may interfere with the device4.

Owners who want to keep the scale can use it with impedance-based measurement turned off in the Withings app4. Withings also recommends turning impedance off in pregnancy, and asking a doctor first if you have a stent or other metal implant4.

Is the Withings Body Scan FDA cleared?

Only its ECG function. The FDA cleared Withings Scan Monitor 2.0, the name for that function, on Aug 23, 202378.

The indications cover adults. They say the monitor detects the presence of atrial fibrillation when it is prescribed or used under care of a physician9. They don’t cover the body composition, vascular age or electrodermal readings9.

No FDA clearance covers the Body Scan’s body composition readings18. The only clearance found for a Withings body composition scale is K121971, decided in 2012 for the earlier “Withings, Smart Body Scale”1819.

Before you buy

InstallationNo installation

No installation. You set it up in the Withings app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and it can't be set up from a computer. A wall handle mount and a cable stopper come in the box. In the US, the ECG function needs its own activation. You give your state and a US phone number, and a cardiologist reviews your first ECG at no added cost.

30 days from receipt, per Withings' refund policy. One clause counts the 30 days from receipt and another from the purchase date. You start the return from your Withings account, print the label and send back the product with all its original items. The product page says free shipping and returns, but the policy says you pay return shipping after a withdrawal, so check the label cost first. Refunds go to the original payment method.

More about this assessment

Body Scan is Withings' handle-equipped smart scale. The handle adds electrodes, which Withings says lets it estimate fat and muscle in five body zones, and it records a 6-lead ECG. Withings lists it at $499.95. Withings says its fat-mass readings correlate 0.99 with DEXA, but that figure comes from its own 2025 study, and no independent DEXA study was found. The FDA cleared only the ECG function, in 2023. Withings says not to use it with a pacemaker or other internal medical device unless impedance measurement is turned off. Baseline data is free, but Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need Withings+ to send data to Apple Health.

Strengths on paper

  • Eight electrodes with a handle, so Withings reports fat and muscle for each arm, each leg and the torso
  • The FDA cleared the ECG function (Withings Scan Monitor 2.0) in August 2023 under 510(k) number K230812
  • Rechargeable battery that Withings says lasts up to 1 year per charge
  • Baseline data and trends are free in the Withings app, and Withings+ is optional
  • Withings lists a 2-year quality guarantee and a 30-day return window

Limitations

  • Costs $499.95, and Withings also sells a newer BodyScan 2 at $599.95
  • Withings' 99% DEXA figure is a correlation from its own 80-person study, not a promise that one reading lands within 1% of DEXA
  • No independent DEXA validation of the Body Scan's body composition was found
  • Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need Withings+ to export data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other apps
  • Not for pacemakers or other internal medical devices unless impedance is turned off, and Withings recommends turning it off in pregnancy
  • US ECG activation needs your state of residence and a US phone number, and 6-lead recordings show only in the mobile apps
  • A stent or other metal implant can cause inaccurate or failed body composition readings, per Withings
  • Needs iOS 18 or later, or Android 12 or later, and can't be set up from a computer

PLAN YOUR OWNERSHIP COSTS

What will it cost to own?

Change the assumptions to fit your use. Leave an unknown cost blank. Add water, subscriptions, cleaning, shipping and taxes if they apply. Use average operating power, not the maximum rating.

3-year known subtotal

$499.95

Incomplete: energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That doesn’t mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • Purchase is the $499.95 list price on Oct 23, 2026, before tax.
  • Other annual costs are $0 because Withings says baseline data and trends stay free in its app and Withings+ is optional. Withings+ costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, which would add $298.50 over three years on the annual plan. That isn't counted.
  • Withings says accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription. It is required to send data to Apple Health, Health Connect and other third-party apps. If you need that sync, add the subscription to the cost.
  • Annual consumables are $0 because the battery is rechargeable and Withings lists no refills. That leaves out battery wear and out-of-warranty repairs. Withings doesn't state the charger's power draw, so energy is unknown.

Evidence & sources.

Are smart scales worth it? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimPrice, specs, box contents, modes, battery, connectivity and the 2-year quality guarantee come from Withings' US product page and support pages. Withings also sells a newer BodyScan 2 at $599.95.1317 Manufacturer information, not independent testing. The product page prints the platform size but not the weight.
  • Regulator recordThe FDA cleared Withings Scan Monitor 2.0, the name for Body Scan's ECG function, on Aug 23, 2023. The record is 510(k) K230812, Class II, electrocardiograph, 21 CFR 870.2340. The indications say it records and displays a two-channel ECG. They add that it detects the presence of atrial fibrillation "when the monitor is prescribed or used under care of a physician." It is intended for adults. The listed settings are hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and homes.79141819 The clearance covers the ECG function only, not body composition, vascular age or the electrodermal activity score. The only FDA clearance found for a Withings body composition scale is K121971, from 2012, for the earlier Withings Smart Body Scale. The database lists Zhongshan Transtek Electronics Co., Ltd. as its applicant. It predates the Body Scan by years, and the record doesn't name it. A clearance isn't a finding that the scale improves health.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says a 2025 internal study with the sports-health center Mon Stade compared Body Scan with DEXA in 80 people. Each had one DEXA scan and then three Body Scan measurements. It reports correlations of r = 0.99 for total fat mass and 0.98 for lean mass and total muscle mass. The figure for total water mass is 0.95.56 This is Withings' own report, not a peer-reviewed paper. Its blog footnote says a 99% correlation doesn't mean one body-fat reading will be within ±1% of DEXA. Nor does it mean two readings in a row will be within ±1% of each other. The pages checked give no bias or limits of agreement.
  • Published studyA 2021 observational study at a Paris hospital compared three consumer smart scales with DEXA in patients referred for a scan. One was the Withings Body Cardio, an earlier Withings model, used by 48 patients. Its median fat-mass error was 3.7 kg too low. The authors concluded that smart scales aren't accurate for body composition and shouldn't replace DEXA in patient care.15 The study didn't test the Body Scan, so these figures don't describe it. It shows how far a Withings scale of an earlier generation was from DEXA on fat mass.
  • Published studyA Withings-funded study of 147 patients (76% with diabetes) compared the Body Scan's electrochemical skin conductance at the feet with a hospital reference device, the Sudoscan. The authors reported a sensitivity of 0.91 and specificity of 0.97 for at least moderate small fiber neuropathy.16 This tests the sweat-gland (electrodermal) measurement, not body composition. Withings sells the US version as a wellness score that isn't intended for diagnosis.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says you should not use the Body Scan if you wear a pacemaker or other internal medical device, because its small electrical signal may interfere. Owners who keep the scale can use it with impedance-based measurement turned off in the app. It also says the scale hasn't been tested or validated in pregnancy and recommends turning impedance off. For a stent or other metal implant, especially in the lower limbs, it recommends talking to a doctor first.4 This is Withings' own safety guidance, not a clinical finding. Turning off fat mass measurement turns it off for every user and account linked to the scale.
  • Manufacturer claimWithings says baseline metrics and trends stay free in its app. Withings+ is optional and costs $9.95 a month or $99.50 a year, with a one-month trial offered at purchase. It adds extras such as a cardiologist review of any ECG within 24 hours. Accounts created on or after Oct 13, 2026 need an active Withings+ subscription to export data to Apple Health, Health Connect and similar apps. Older accounts are unaffected.11011 Withings says you keep direct access to your data whatever your subscription status.
