COST TO OWN

What an air purifier costs to own over three years

An air purifier’s price is only the start. Filters add to it every year, and a purifier that runs all day uses power all day. This page shows the formula the reviews use, works through an example and lists the recurring costs recorded in the reviews. Missing costs stay visible instead of being counted as zero.

The bottom line

The estimate is the purchase and installation, plus three years of filters and fees, plus electricity at an editable $0.18 per kWh. At each review’s main replacement interval, filters run $44.99 to $95 a year. Electricity is the usual gap: only one review, the Atem Desk’s, has an estimate.

Start with the exact model

No air review records an installation cost or a required subscription, so filters and electricity are the running costs. Only IQAir publishes power draw at each default fan speed, so the Atem Desk is the only review with an electricity estimate20.

Use the price and replacement filter for the exact model you’re considering. Each review lists its sources, the date they were checked and a calculator you can edit. The figures are budgeting estimates, not measured bills. The cheapest total isn’t a ranking either, since a desk purifier and a room purifier do different jobs.

Room fit before price

Size the purifier to the room before you compare costs. A low price doesn’t help if the purifier can’t clean your room fast enough. Compare room sizes at 4.8 air changes an hour. At that rate, Blueair rates the Blue Pure 511 for 189 ft², and Levoit rates the Vital 200S-P for 388 ft²12. The methodology page explains how we compare room sizes.

Filters, hours and fan speed

Filters and electricity are separate costs. Each review records the filter, its price and the maker’s replacement interval. Check the hours behind that interval. Alen rates the 45i’s filters for round-the-clock use, and IQAir rates the Atem Desk’s for 10 hours a day on speed 334. Rabbit Air says a MinusA2 kit lasts a year at 24/7, or up to 2 years at 12 hours a day524.

A power rating isn’t an average draw. Six of the ten purifiers come with a single figure, and the maker doesn’t say which speed it describes. Coway lists 77 W for the Mighty, with nothing for low speed or Eco6. Without a figure for auto or low speed, the review leaves electricity unknown rather than guess.

The calculation

Three-year cost = purchase + installation + 3 × yearly filters and parts + 3 × other yearly costs + (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × 365 × 3 × electricity price per kWh.

The calculator starts at $0.18 per kWh. That’s an editable assumption, not your local rate. The US Energy Information Administration puts the average US residential price at 17.3 cents per kWh for 2025 and projects 18.2 cents for 20267. Use the rate on your bill if you know it.

Enter zero only when a cost is known to be zero. A missing value gives an incomplete subtotal. Tax, shipping, financing and resale are left out unless you add them.

A worked example

Take a made-up purifier with a $500 purchase and $100 for installation. Filters cost $60 a year, and other costs come to $20 a year. It draws 50 W for 8 hours a day, and electricity costs $0.20 per kWh.

Purchase and installation come to $600. Three years of filters add $180, and three years of other costs add $60. The unit uses 0.4 kWh a day, or 438 kWh over three years. At $0.20 per kWh, that’s $87.60 of electricity. The three-year total is $927.60.

At the $0.18 default, the same electricity costs $78.84, and the total falls to $918.84. Now suppose the installation cost is unknown. At $0.20 per kWh, leaving it out gives a known subtotal of $827.60. That’s a floor, not a full ownership cost.

Worked example: three years at $0.20 per kWh
ItemHow it’s figuredThree years
PurchasePaid once$500.00
InstallationPaid once$100.00
Filters3 × $60$180.00
Other yearly costs3 × $20$60.00
Electricity50 W × 8 h × 365 × 3 = 438 kWh, at $0.20$87.60
TotalSum of the above$927.60

Recurring costs across the lineup

The table pulls the recurring costs from the air reviews, at prices checked on October 13, 2026. Yearly figures use one-time filter prices, not subscription prices. No review records a lamp, a refill or a required subscription, so filters and electricity are the running costs. The subtotal is the purchase plus three years of filters, with electricity added only where it’s known.

What the table shows

Filters can cost more than a small purifier. The Blue Pure 511 is $99.99, and three years of filters add $143.94115. Austin Air’s $395 filter lasts up to five years, about $79 a year10. You pay that $395 in one go, though, and Austin Air says you may want to replace it sooner in high-pollution or pet-heavy homes10.

The Core 300-P has the lowest yearly filter cost in the table, but only at Levoit’s longest interval. Its $29.99 filter works out to $44.99 a year if it lasts 8 months, the long end of Levoit’s 6 to 8 month advice34. Change it every 6 months and filters cost $59.98 a year. The purchase plus three years of filters then comes to $284.93, not $239.96.

Electricity is the biggest gap. IQAir is the only maker here that publishes draw at each default fan speed, so the Atem Desk is the only review with an electricity figure20. At 3.4 W on speed 3 for 10 hours a day, it uses about 12.4 kWh a year. That’s about $2.23 at $0.18 per kWh. Austin Air publishes no wattage at all911.

A single rating gives a sense of scale, not a bill. If the Coway Mighty drew its 77 W around the clock, it would use about 675 kWh a year6. At $0.18 per kWh, that’s about $121. The Core 300-P’s 56 W rating works the same way: about 491 kWh a year around the clock, or about $8833. Energy Star lists 193 kWh a year for the 311i Max, about $35, but doesn’t say how many hours a day that assumes14.

Two prices in the table were sales when checked. The Winix 5510 was $199.99, down from $259.9926. Its Filter Q set was $49.99, down from $79.9927. At regular prices, the 5510’s three-year subtotal rises from $349.96 to $499.96.

Filters and the warranty

A cheaper third-party filter can cost you warranty cover. Winix says non-Winix filters void its warranty29. IQAir says damage from third-party filters may void its warranty19. Alen’s guarantee says to use only Alen filters, and you need a subscription or proof of a filter purchase in the last 12 months30. Blueair’s warranty needs filter changes within its recommended time frame, with proof of purchase31.
