Austin AirHealthMate

Heavy steel purifier with lots of carbon, five-year filters and no published CADR

The verdict

The HealthMate is a 47 lb steel purifier with a big HEPA filter and up to 15 lb of carbon and zeolite. Austin Air says one filter lasts up to five years, which keeps upkeep near $79 a year. The catch is that there's no published CADR, room size, noise or power figure, so you can't size it to a room.

The trade-off

You pay $715 or more without a CADR, room size, noise or wattage figure to judge it by.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want a steel purifier with lots of carbon for odors and a filter change only every few years.

  • You want to leave a purifier running and change the filter only every few years
  • Odors bother you as much as dust, since the filter holds up to 15 lb of carbon and zeolite
  • You'd take a steel housing and a five-year unit warranty over app features

THINK TWICE IF

  • You want to match a purifier to your room by CADR or square footage
  • You need a published noise figure before putting it in a bedroom
  • You'd need to carry it up and down stairs (it weighs 47 lb)
  • You want an air-quality sensor, auto mode or app control
What still needs checking
  • CADR for smoke, dust and pollen, and the room size it suits
  • Power draw at each speed, so running cost is unknown
  • Noise at each speed
  • How the pro-rated filter warranty is calculated
  • Why Austin Air's two stores list different prices
  • Whether it's in AHAM's Verifide directory or on CARB's certified list

More about this assessment

The HealthMate is a steel purifier with a 14.5 in square footprint. It stands 23 in tall and weighs 47 lb. One filter holds two pre-filters, up to 15 lb of activated carbon and zeolite, and 60 sq ft of HEPA. Austin Air says the filter lasts up to five years, and a replacement costs $395. The unit has a five-year warranty, and the filter has a pro-rated five-year warranty. There's no published CADR, room size, noise or power draw, so it's hard to compare with rated purifiers.

Strengths on paper

  • Up to 15 lb of activated carbon and zeolite for odors and gases
  • One filter covers all four stages, and Austin Air rates it for up to five years
  • Filter upkeep works out to about $79 a year at the stated life
  • Five-year unit warranty plus a pro-rated five-year filter warranty
  • Steel housing with a powder-coat finish and a 360° intake
  • 30-day no-questions-asked return

Limitations

  • No CADR, room size, noise or wattage published, so you can't compare it fairly with rated purifiers
  • Heavy at 47 lb and 23 in tall
  • The $395 filter is a big cost all at once, and Austin Air suggests changing it sooner with heavy pollution or pets
  • Austin Air's two web stores show different prices ($715 and $845)
  • Not Energy Star certified
  • The unit warranty depends on returning a registration
  • Controls are a three-speed fan, with no sensor, auto mode, timer or app mentioned

Replacement parts & cost assumptions

Recorded recurring parts and refills:

  • HealthMate replacement filter (all four stages): $395 every 60 months. Austin Air says the filter lasts up to five years in normal home use. It suggests you may want to replace it sooner in homes with heavy pollution or pets. Replacements include the pre-filter layers. The white filter fits white and sandstone units, and the black filter fits black and midnight blue. Both are $395.
  • Purchase is the $715 list price on austinair.com. At the $845 price on Austin Air's other store, the three-year total rises by $130.
  • Filters: one $395 filter every five years works out to $79 a year. Austin Air suggests replacing it sooner with heavy pollution or pets.
  • Hours per day is 24 because Austin Air recommends running it around the clock.
  • Energy is unknown. Austin Air doesn't publish wattage at any speed.
  • Installation is $0 because it's freestanding. There are no recurring fees: the product pages mention no subscription, app or membership.

Evidence & sources.

Do air purifiers work? Our evidence review grades the research as Strong. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimAustin Air says the HEPA layer captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 micron and 99% down to 0.1 micron, and that the filter lasts up to five years.13 Maker's claims with no linked test report. Filter efficiency isn't the same as how fast the unit cleans a room, which is what CADR measures.
  • Manufacturer claimThe only certification mark on the product pages is "CSA approved".13 Austin Air doesn't say what the CSA approval covers. It isn't a CADR rating, and the pages show no AHAM Verifide, Energy Star or CARB mark.
  • CertificationNo Austin Air model appears in Energy Star's list of certified room air cleaners.5 Checked against Energy Star's current (version 3.0) certified list. Without a listing, there's no Energy Star figure for its CADR or power use.
