IQAirAtem Desk

Quiet $400 desk purifier that blows filtered air at you, not the room

The verdict

The Atem Desk is a $399.99 purifier that sits on your desk and blows filtered air toward you. It's quiet on low and draws 3.4 W on its top default speed. The catch is reach: it moves 18 cfm by default and has no CADR, so don't count on it to clean the room.

The trade-off

It moves 18 cfm on its top default speed and has no CADR, so it's no substitute for a room purifier.

A GOOD FIT FOR

One person at a desk or bedside who wants quiet, filtered air aimed at them.

  • One person at a desk, workstation or bedside table
  • You want quiet airflow close to you; IQAir rates speed 1 at 20 dB(A) sound power
  • You want almost no running power: 3.4 W on the top default speed
  • You travel; it takes 100 to 240 V and comes with regional plugs

THINK TWICE IF

  • Cleaning a bedroom or living room; it moves 18 cfm on its top default speed and has no CADR
  • Smoke smell, cooking odors or gases; IQAir lists only a particle filter
  • You need a CADR or certification you can check; IQAir's page shows none

What still needs checking
  • Whether AHAM Verifide or Energy Star lists it
  • Whether CARB has certified it; CARB's list shows no IQAir entry from November 2025 on, and older entries didn't load
  • Power draw and noise at the 39 cfm maximum
  • Filter life beyond 10 hours a day or above speed 3
  • How much filtered air reaches your face at a given distance
  • The filter subscription price
  • Who ran IQAir's influenza A test, and in what size room

WarrantyOne year

One year. For home use, it becomes three years if you register within 90 days of purchase. You also need to join IQAir's filter subscription within 12 months and stay on it, or show proof of buying genuine IQAir filters every 12 to 15 months. It covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original buyer. You need proof of purchase from an authorized North American retailer. Filters aren't covered, and damage from third-party filters may void it. You pay to ship and insure the unit to IQAir for warranty service, and IQAir pays the return trip.

More about this assessment

The Atem Desk is IQAir's personal purifier. It sits on a stand on your desk and blows filtered air toward you. It lists at $399.99 in white or black. IQAir rates its default speeds at 4.7 to 18 cfm, and a custom setting goes up to 39 cfm. Those are airflow figures, and IQAir publishes no CADR. It draws 3.4 W on speed 3. The $79.99 filter lasts about a year at 10 hours a day on speed 3. That puts three years at about $640 before electricity. The warranty is one year, or three if you register within 90 days and stay on genuine IQAir filters.

Strengths on paper

  • Quiet on its lower speeds: 20 and 27 dB(A) sound power on speeds 1 and 2
  • Tiny power draw: under 1.5 W on speed 1 and 3.4 W on speed 3
  • One $79.99 filter a year at IQAir's rating of 10 hours a day on speed 3
  • IQAir rates the HyperHEPA filter at 99% or better down to 0.003 microns
  • Compact: 11.77 in wide and 5.51 in deep on its stand
  • App control over Bluetooth for up to four units, or tap the logo on the front
  • The app tracks filter life, and an LED flashes red twice when it's due
  • Runs on 100 to 240 V with regional plugs in the box

Limitations

  • No CADR from IQAir, so you can't compare it with room purifiers on equal terms
  • The 150 ft² claim works out to under 2 air changes an hour with 8 ft ceilings, even at 39 cfm
  • Noise and power figures cover only the three default speeds, not the 39 cfm maximum
  • Noise is given as sound power, which isn't directly comparable with sound pressure figures
  • Base warranty is one year; three years needs registration within 90 days plus a filter subscription or regular genuine filter purchases
  • Damage from third-party filters may void the warranty
  • Opened units carry a 15% restocking fee if you return them
  • No carbon or gas stage on the spec sheet
  • IQAir's pages give two efficiency figures at 0.003 microns: 99% or better, and 99.5%

Replacement parts & cost assumptions

Recorded recurring parts and refills:

  • Atem Desk HyperHEPA filter: $79.99 every 12 months. IQAir rates it at about a year at 10 hours a day on speed 3. An LED under the diffuser flashes red twice when it's due. IQAir doesn't give a life for longer days or higher speeds. The filter page shows no subscription discount.
  • Purchase is the $399.99 list price on IQAir's US page.
  • Filters are one $79.99 HyperHEPA filter a year, at IQAir's rating of 10 hours a day on speed 3. IQAir says filter life depends on how much you run it and how polluted the air is.
  • Watts and hours follow IQAir's own filter-life basis: 3.4 W on speed 3 for 10 hours a day. That's about 12.4 kWh a year. Standby at under 0.5 W for the other 14 hours adds at most 2.6 kWh a year.
  • No required fees. The three-year warranty needs a filter subscription or proof of genuine filter purchases every 12 to 15 months. Neither the product page nor the filter page shows the subscription price.

Evidence & sources.

Do air purifiers work? Our evidence review grades the research as Strong. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimIQAir rates the three default speeds at 4.7, 8.8 and 18 cfm, with a custom range up to 39 cfm. It publishes no CADR.12 These are airflow figures with the filter in place. A filter purifier can't deliver more clean air than it moves, so 39 cfm is a ceiling on any CADR. The spec sheet gives the custom range as 2 to 39 cfm.
  • Manufacturer claimIQAir says the Atem Desk covers up to 150 ft² and delivers purified air directly to your breathing zone.2 IQAir gives no air-change rate or test method for 150 ft². A heading on the page claims "99.9% room purification up to 150 sq ft" without saying how long that takes. With 8 ft ceilings, 150 ft² gets just under 2 air changes an hour at 39 cfm and about 0.9 at 18 cfm. Those figures assume all the airflow is clean air, which is the best case.
  • Manufacturer claimIQAir's product and filter pages cite independent lab testing in which influenza A concentration fell 97% after 15 minutes and 99.9% after 30 minutes.23 The footnote names the "Atem Personal Air Purifier" but not the lab, the chamber size or the fan speed. A chamber test shows virus removal from a closed space. It isn't a CADR, and it doesn't show a health benefit for the person using it.
  • Manufacturer claimIQAir's product page calls the filtration ozone-free and shows no AHAM Verifide, Energy Star or CARB mark.2 The page cites no ozone test or certification. Its badges are a Global Innovations Award and a Parent Tested, Parent Approved award, and neither rates air cleaning.
  • Regulator recordCARB's list of certified air cleaning devices shows no IQAir or Atem entry in the part that loads.6 The table runs from April 2026 back to November 2025, then cuts off mid-row. Older entries didn't load, so the Atem Desk's CARB status is unknown, not missing.
