What earns a place
The guide covers ten air purifiers for US buyers. Most are meant to clean a whole room. IQAir’s Atem Desk is the exception: it sits on your desk and blows filtered air toward you1. Prices checked on October 13, 2026 show the spread. The Blueair Blue Pure 511 was $99.99, and the Austin Air HealthMate was $71523.
The room purifiers are the Alen BreatheSmart 45i, Austin Air HealthMate, Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty, Rabbit Air MinusA2 and Winix 5500-2. Blueair has two, the Blue Pure 311i Max and Blue Pure 511. So does Levoit, with the Core 300-P and Vital 200S-P. Winix marks the 5500-2 as discontinued, and its air purifier page no longer lists it45. Its review covers the 5510, the closest model Winix sells now.
A purifier has to suit a real space: a bedroom, an office, a living room or the air around a desk. It also needs enough published detail to judge it: a price, filter prices and a schedule, and warranty and return terms. When a maker leaves out a key figure, such as CADR or power draw, the review says so rather than guess.
Where the facts come from
Every air review is built from the sources it cites: maker pages, manuals and policies, certifier and regulator listings, and published studies. Prices are checked on the date shown.
What we weigh
Nine questions decide the picks. Each answer comes from the maker’s page, manual or policy, or from a certifier’s or regulator’s listing, with the date it was checked.
- Enough clean air for your room. CADR, the clean air delivery rate, is how much filtered air a purifier delivers each minute. We compare room sizes at 4.8 air changes an hour, one full change every 12.5 minutes. Winix says that rate is based on smoke removal in rooms with 8 ft ceilings6. At that rate, Blueair rates the Blue Pure 511 for 189 ft² and the 311i Max for 439 ft²27.
- A listing that backs the figure. A maker’s CADR carries more weight when a certifier lists the same numbers. Energy Star’s listing for the 311i Max matches Blueair’s 283 for smoke, 314 for dust and 365 for pollen78. Winix says the 5510 is AHAM Verifide, but AHAM’s directory loads by JavaScript and couldn’t be read69. So that claim is recorded as unconfirmed. Levoit says the Core 300-P is CARB compliant and ETL listed, without an executive order number4243. It wasn’t in the part of CARB’s list that loaded45.
- Noise at a speed you’d use. The quietest setting moves the least air, so a low noise figure says little about cleaning at full CADR. Blueair gives the 311i Max 23 dB on low and 50 dB on high7. Winix publishes noise only for the 5510’s slowest speed, and Austin Air publishes none for the HealthMate36. IQAir gives the Atem Desk’s noise as sound power, which isn’t directly comparable with sound pressure figures10.
- Particles or gases. Particle filters don’t remove every gas, and a thin carbon layer isn’t proof of lasting odor removal. Austin Air packs up to 15 lb of activated carbon and zeolite into the HealthMate’s filter3. Blueair pitches the carbon in the 311i Max’s standard filter at light household odors7. The Atem Desk’s spec sheet lists no carbon or gas stage10.
- Ionizers and ozone. The Alen, Coway, Rabbit Air and Winix purifiers add an ionizer or Winix’s PlasmaWave, and each can be switched off1114. Coway and Rabbit Air say their units meet a 24-hour ozone limit of 0.050 ppmv, but neither names a lab or test report1213. California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) keeps a list of certified air cleaning devices, and we check it by model15.
- Filters and their cost. Filters are the main running cost, so each review records the filter’s price and replacement interval. The reviews’ yearly filter figures run from $44.99 for the Levoit Core 300-P to $95 for the MinusA2’s kit1744. The Core 300-P figure assumes a $29.99 filter every 8 months, the long end of Levoit’s 6 to 8 month advice44. At 6 months it’s $59.98, more than the Blue Pure 511’s $47.981644. Check the hours behind each interval. Alen and Rabbit Air base filter life on round-the-clock use, while IQAir assumes 10 hours a day on speed 3111819.
- Where it goes. Clearance adds to the footprint. Coway asks for about 8 in from walls, and Winix asks for 12 to 18 in1214. Levoit wants 15 in of open space in front of the Vital 200S-P20. The MinusA2 can hang on a wall, but its screws need to go into studs13. The HealthMate weighs 47 lb, which matters if you’ll move it between rooms3.
- Warranty and returns. Levoit covers the Vital 200S-P for 2 years with no registration21. Blueair’s cover on the 311i Max goes from 1 year to 3 only if you register within 60 days722. Alen’s and IQAir’s longer cover depends on buying their filters2324. Rabbit Air takes returns on its own orders for 90 days, and IQAir charges a 15% restocking fee on opened units2526.
- Power draw. It decides the running cost, and most makers give a single figure with no speed attached. Coway lists 77 W for the Mighty, and Winix lists 65 W for the 55101427. Levoit rates the Core 300-P at 56 W42. IQAir is the exception, with figures for each default speed, up to 3.4 W on speed 310. Without an average draw, electricity stays unknown in most reviews.
Why one purifier over another
Each pick names the need it serves, its trade-off and an alternative. Picks are for different needs, not a ranking. A lower price, a smaller footprint, wall mounting or clearer terms can justify a pick. None of those proves a purifier does more for your health, and there are no scores or star ratings.
A finding for one model doesn’t carry over to another. CARB’s list shows Coway’s newer MightyC and Mighty2, but the AP-1512HH wasn’t in the part that loaded15. It also shows Winix’s 5530, which takes the same Filter Q as the 55102845. Neither listing counts for the model we review. The same goes for a price, a filter or a test result.
Filters are model-specific too. The 311i Max takes a $44.99 Particle + Carbon filter29. The similar-sounding 311i+ Max takes a different one, at $49.9941. Blueair’s own 311i Max filter page mixes up the two names in its FAQ29.
What we don’t weigh
Big room claims at slow air changes don’t move a purifier up. Alen says the 45i cleans 1,900 sq ft every hour and rates its top speed at 255 CFM11. With 8 ft ceilings, that’s one air change an hour. At 4.8 air changes an hour, the same 255 CFM covers about 400 sq ft.
Rabbit Air’s MinusA2 claim works the same way. Its 815 ft² assumes 2 air changes an hour on the top fan speed30. On its smoke CADR of 180, it suits about 280 ft² at 4.8 air changes30.
Filter efficiency isn’t cleaning speed. Austin Air, Blueair and Coway each quote 99.97% capture down to a stated particle size2331. Levoit makes the same 99.97% claim for the Core 300-P’s main filter44. It ties its HEPA claim to sleep mode and doesn’t name the lab behind it44. That describes the filter. CADR measures how fast the whole unit cleans a room, so it’s the figure we compare.
Chamber tests and badges are set aside too. IQAir cites a lab test where influenza A fell 97% in 15 minutes, without naming the lab, chamber size or fan speed1. A chamber result isn’t a CADR, and it doesn’t show a health benefit. Alen’s page shows Quiet Mark and SleepScore Validated badges and says 93% of users reported improved sleep. It credits a peer-reviewed SleepScore Labs study but doesn’t give its title11.
A certification claim needs a listing behind it. Alen claims Energy Star’s 2025 Most Efficient mark for the 45i, but Energy Star’s data lists only three other Alen models1132. The only mark on Austin Air’s HealthMate pages is “CSA approved”, and Austin Air doesn’t say what it covers333.
How facts are checked
Every fact in a review cites the page it came from and the date it was checked. When a maker’s documents disagree, the review gives both. Alen’s spec table lists up to 64 W for the 45i, while its FAQ says 50 W on high11. Blueair’s 511 page gives 24 to 49 dB in the spec table and 22 to 44 dB in its FAQ2. Levoit’s page rates the Vital 200S-P at 50 W, and its manual says 51 W2034.
Listings are searched by brand and model. We searched Energy Star’s room air cleaner data for the Alen 45i, Austin Air HealthMate, Levoit Core 300-P and Vital 200S-P, Rabbit Air MinusA2 and Winix 5510. None of them turned up323538. CARB’s list loaded only partway, and AHAM’s directory couldn’t be read91545. A model missing from a list that couldn’t be fully read is recorded as unconfirmed, not as a fail. A figure a maker doesn’t publish is recorded as not stated, never as zero.
How prices are checked
Prices are US prices for the exact variant, from the maker’s own store, before tax and shipping. The prices quoted here were checked on October 13, 2026. A sale is labeled as one. The Winix 5510 was $199.99 on sale against a $259.99 regular price6. Its Filter Q set was $49.99 on sale against $79.9928.
When a maker shows two prices, the review names the one it uses. Austin Air lists the HealthMate at $715 on austinair.com and $845 on its other store333. The review uses $715. Levoit’s Black listing puts the Vital 200S-P at $199.9939. Its main page shows the same model number at $189.99 without naming a color, so the review uses $199.9934. The Core 300-P is the same story. Its Black listing is $104.99, and its main listing shows $99.99 without a color, so the review uses $104.994243.
Subscription discounts aren’t deducted. Alen takes 10% off 45i filters on subscription40. Blueair takes 25% off the first 311i Max filter and 15% off later ones29. The reviews use one-time prices.
The three-year estimate adds the purchase, installation and three years of filters and other recurring costs. Electricity goes in at an editable $0.18 per kWh. A cost that isn’t published leaves the total incomplete rather than counting as zero. The ownership cost explainer shows the formula and each purifier’s recurring costs.
What we don’t do
These limits apply to every air review and pick.
- We don’t publish lab results or measurements of our own. Every figure comes from the sources a review cites.
- We don’t give scores, star ratings or a single overall winner.
- We don’t make health claims for any purifier, or treat a chamber test as a result in your home.
- We don’t count an unknown cost as zero, or carry one model’s figure or listing over to another.
- We don’t present a sale price as a list price or deduct subscription discounts.
