Oura Ring vs Apple Watch for sleep tracking: cost, battery and accuracy

Oura Ring 5 and Apple Watch Series 12 both cost $399. Oura adds a $69.99-a-year membership for most of its app. The watch has no required fee, but it needs an iPhone and a charge most days. This page compares what each tracks overnight, the sleep-stage studies behind them, battery, fit, three-year cost, warranty and returns, with Oura Ring 4 where it differs.

The bottom line

Choose Oura Ring 5 if you’d rather sleep in a ring, charge every 6 to 9 days or use Android, and will pay $69.99 a year. Choose Apple Watch Series 12 if you have an iPhone, want a full smartwatch with no fee and can charge it daily. The sleep-stage studies behind both tested earlier models.

Oura Ring vs Apple Watch for sleep: which should you get?

Oura Ring 5 and Apple Watch Series 12 are both picks in our sleep tracker guide. Oura Ring 5 is its best all-round smart ring, and Apple Watch Series 12 its best sleep tracking smartwatch for iPhone owners. Get the Oura Ring 5 if you want something small to sleep in that lasts days between charges. Oura rates it at 6 to 9 days, and it works with iPhone and Android12. The catch is the membership: after the first included month it’s $69.99 a year, so three years with the $399 ring come to $608.97 before tax46.

Get the Apple Watch Series 12 if you have an iPhone 11 or later and want sleep tracking inside a full smartwatch. It’s $399 for the 42mm GPS model, and Apple lists no subscription for its sleep score or health features1417. The catch is battery life. Apple rates it at up to 24 hours, so you’ll charge it most days, and it doesn’t work with Android phones1415.

Accuracy doesn’t settle it, because we found no published sleep-stage study of Ring 5 or Series 12. In a 2024 sleep-lab study that Oura funded, the older Oura Gen3 ring and Apple Watch Series 8 matched polysomnography on 76.3% and 75.0% of 30-second epochs across four stages12. Each maker’s own figures also rest on earlier hardware or recordings920.

The two side by side

None of these figures is evidence of a health or longevity effect. Both cost $399 up front, and only Oura charges a yearly fee for most of its app4617. Oura rates Ring 5 at 6 to 9 days a charge, and Apple rates Series 12 at up to 24 hours114.

Prices are US list prices on each maker’s official pages, before tax and shipping, checked on October 23, 2026. Every figure is the maker’s own unless a study is named. ‘Not stated’ means the maker didn’t publish it.

Which one suits your nights

Each suits a different need, and this isn’t a ranking. Both send overnight readings to a phone app115. They differ in what you wear to bed, how often you charge, which phone you need and what you keep paying.

  • A small ring to sleep in, with days between charges: Oura Ring 5. It’s 2.28 mm thick, weighs from 2 g and lists 6 to 9 days a charge12. It works with iPhone and Android, and Oura takes returns within 30 days of receipt17. The trade-off: most of the app needs the $69.99-a-year membership, so three years cost $608.97 before tax46. The ring holds only up to three days of data, and the study behind Oura’s sleep figure tested an earlier research ring29.
  • An iPhone owner who wants sleep tracking in a full smartwatch: Apple Watch Series 12. It’s $399 with no required fee, and it adds sleep apnea notifications and an ECG app to the sleep score1417. FDA cleared its hypertension notification feature in September 2025, though the feature flagged only 41.2% of people with hypertension in its validation study16. The trade-off: Apple rates the battery at up to 24 hours, so you’ll charge it most days14. It needs an iPhone 11 or later, and Apple’s return window is 14 days1518.

What each one tracks while you sleep

Both estimate sleep stages and give you a morning score. Oura reports light, deep and REM sleep1. Its Sleep Score is based on total sleep, HRV, nighttime movement, sleep regularity and more, and its Readiness Score adds temperature trends and heart rate1. Green and infrared LEDs measure heart rate, HRV and respiration rate, and a digital sensor tracks temperature trends1.

Apple’s Sleep app shows Awake, REM, Core and Deep sleep1520. Apple says Core covers the N1 and N2 stages, close to what other trackers call light sleep20. Its sleep score weighs sleep duration, bedtime consistency, how often you wake up and time in each stage14. The Vitals app adds overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration and HRV, and Apple says it’s for wellness only, not medical use1415.

Their breathing features differ. Apple says its sleep apnea notifications are intended to detect signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea in people 18 and older without a diagnosis14. Oura says its nighttime blood oxygen sensing can tell if you’re having breathing disturbances1. Without a membership, though, Oura’s app shows only the Readiness, Activity and Sleep scores4.

How accurate is each one for sleep stages?

Oura states 95% sleep-staging accuracy against a clinical sleep lab, and its footnote says that’s for sleep versus wake1. The paper it cites tested a second-generation research ring over 440 nights from 106 people19. It reached 96% for sleep versus wake and 79% across wake, light, deep and REM9. That ring isn’t Ring 5. Oura’s 99% heart-rate figure traces to a 2020 study of 49 adults on an earlier ring8.

Apple’s evidence is its own white paper, updated in October 202520. The algorithm reads the watch’s accelerometer, including breathing-related motion20. Apple checked it against sleep-lab and home polysomnography on 299 nights from 166 people who weren’t in the data used to build it20. After the 2025 update, the median kappa across four stages was 0.68 (1 is perfect agreement), and 79% of wake epochs were scored as wake20.

Those recordings come from Apple’s 2022 validation, so no Series 12 was among the watches20. Apple says the watch models it assessed made no difference to kappa20. Neither maker cites a sleep-stage study of Ring 5 or Series 12 itself.

One study tested both brands on the same night. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital compared Oura Ring Gen3 and Apple Watch Series 8 with polysomnography in 35 healthy adults aged 20 to 5012. Across four stages, Oura matched the lab on 76.3% of 30-second epochs and Apple on 75.0%12. Apple underestimated deep sleep by 43 minutes and overestimated light sleep by 45 minutes, while Oura’s stage totals didn’t differ significantly from the lab’s12.

Agreement on nightly deep and REM minutes was poor for every device in that study (ICC 0.13 to 0.37)12. Six of the 35 had no Apple Watch data, even though the watches were charged and synced12. Oura funded the study, and the lead author sits on Oura’s Medical Advisory Board12.

A 2023 Korean study of 75 adults compared 11 sleep trackers with lab polysomnography, including Oura Ring 3 and Apple Watch 813. Their four-stage agreement scores (macro F1, where 1.0 is perfect) were 0.52 for the ring and 0.49 for the watch13. Some authors are affiliated with Asleep, a company whose sleep app the study also tested, and some hold stock or stock options in it13. Our evidence review covers more devices and studies.

Battery and charging around sleep

At up to 24 hours a charge, you’ll need to fit the watch’s charging around bedtime14. Apple’s 24-hour rating includes 6 hours of sleep tracking, and Low Power Mode stretches it to up to 38 hours1415. Apple says a 5-minute charge gives up to 10 hours of sleep tracking, and about 30 minutes reaches 80%15. Apple timed those charges with a 20W USB-C power adapter, which isn’t in the box15.

Oura rates Ring 5 at 6 to 9 days, depending on ring size and use, and a full charge takes about 80 minutes12. Oura says its Charging Case gives a full day of battery in 10 minutes, but the case is sold separately1. Ring 5 stores up to three days of data, so sync it with the app at least that often2.

What each one costs over three years

Oura Ring 5 in Silver and the 42mm Apple Watch Series 12 both cost $399, each checked on Oct 23, 2026617. Oura’s membership adds $69.99 a year, so three years come to $608.97 before tax46. Apple lists no subscription for the sleep score or other health features, so its three-year cost stays at $39914. Over three years, Oura costs $209.97 more.

Oura’s fee buys most of its app. Paying monthly at $5.99 comes to $71.88 a year4. Without a membership, the app shows only the Readiness, Activity and Sleep scores, though you can still export your data as CSV4. Apple Music and Apple Fitness+ are separate services and aren’t counted14.

Neither total includes charging electricity, since neither maker states the charger’s power draw. Apple’s warranty excludes batteries that wear down over time unless a defect caused the failure19. Oura’s 1-year protection plan comes with the ring, and the product page doesn’t say whether it covers battery wear6. The wearables cost page adds up three years for all 18 wearables we review.

Phone, fit and comfort

Apple Watch Series 12 needs an iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), on iOS 27 or later15. It doesn’t work with Android phones15. Oura Ring 5 pairs with the Oura App on iOS or Android, so it keeps working if you switch phones12.

Oura sells Ring 5 in whole sizes 6 to 13 only, and its sizing differs slightly from Ring 42. Oura says to wear its sizing kit for at least 24 hours, including while sleeping, before you settle on a size6. It recommends the index finger for the best accuracy3. Oura calls Ring 5 its most comfortable smart ring yet, with 40% less volume than Ring 42.

On the wrist, the watch is much larger. The 42mm aluminum case is 42 mm high, 37 mm wide and 9.7 mm deep, and weighs 32.2 g15. Apple says that size fits 130 to 200 mm wrists, and one Sport Band size comes in the box1517. Apple’s Series 12 pages don’t describe comfort or what it’s like to sleep in1415.

Warranty and returns

Oura gives you longer to decide. Its online store takes returns within 30 days of receipt if the ring is fully functional and undamaged, with the charger and cable7. Original shipping isn’t refunded, each item can be returned or exchanged once, and exchanges are only for another size of the same ring7. Oura says to cancel the membership when you return a ring, so the charges don’t continue7.

Apple takes returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition with all parts, accessories and packaging, and you need a receipt18. Apple doesn’t state restocking fees or return shipping costs18. Its one-year limited warranty excludes accidental damage, and batteries that wear down over time unless a defect caused the failure19. Apple says AppleCare plans are separate from and in addition to that warranty19.

Oura includes a 1-year protection plan, with upgrades to 2 years for $45 or 3 years for $606. The product page doesn’t say whether it covers battery wear, scratches or loss6. Oura’s return FAQ says warranty replacements can’t be returned or refunded7.

Where Oura Ring 4 differs

Oura still sells Ring 4, its previous ring, at $349 in Silver on its US store, checked Oct 23, 202611. It needs the same $69.99-a-year membership, so three years come to $558.97 before tax411. Oura says Ring 5 has the same membership features as Ring 42. Like Ring 5, it works with iOS and Android10.

The hardware differs. Ring 4 is 7.9 mm wide and 2.88 mm thick, against 6.09 mm and 2.28 mm for Ring 5, and weighs 3.3 to 5.2 g210. It has three photodetectors to Ring 5’s two, and it stores up to seven days of data instead of three2. Oura rates its battery at 5 to 8 days and sells it in sizes 4 to 15210. Oura says Ring 5 is 40% smaller, with greater accuracy and battery power10.
