The verdict

Oura Ring 4 is a titanium smart ring with a battery Oura rates at 5 to 8 days. It's for you if you want Oura's sleep, heart-rate and temperature-trend tracking and don't need Ring 5's smaller size. The catch is the membership for full app features: it brings the $349 Silver ring to about $559 over three years, before tax.

The trade-off

You pay a yearly membership for full features, and Oura says Ring 5 is 40% smaller with greater accuracy and battery power.

About this price

Oura's US Ring 4 Silver page lists the Silver finish at $349, with no sale or strikethrough price. That's for the ring only, before tax and shipping. The Oura Membership is billed separately. The Ring 4 page puts it at $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year for US members, before tax.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want Oura's sleep, heart-rate and temperature-trend tracking in the previous-generation ring and don't need Ring 5's smaller size.

  • You want Oura's sleep, 24/7 heart-rate and temperature-trend tracking and don't mind a $69.99 yearly membership
  • You'd rather wear a ring than a wrist band overnight
  • You're paying with HSA or FSA funds, which Oura says the ring is eligible for

THINK TWICE IF

  • You won't pay an ongoing fee, since Oura says the ring has only limited functionality without a membership
  • You want Oura's smallest ring: Oura says Ring 5 is 40% smaller than Ring 4
  • You need a medical device, since the Oura pages checked don't state FDA clearance for Ring 4 features
What still needs checking
  • Who pays return shipping, which Oura's return FAQ doesn't say
  • How long Oura will keep selling and supporting Ring 4 now that Ring 5 is on sale
  • How accurately Ring 4 itself stages sleep against polysomnography
  • Battery lifespan, out-of-warranty replacement cost and charging power draw
  • The FDA regulatory status of Ring 4 features, which the pages checked didn't confirm

ReturnsIf you bought the ring directly from Oura's online store, you can return it…

If you bought the ring directly from Oura's online store, you can return it within 30 days of receiving the order. It has to be fully functional and undamaged, and come back with the charger and USB-C cable. Ring sets can't be partly returned. Exchanges are only for a different size of the same ring, and each item can be returned or exchanged once. Refunds go to the original payment method, but original shipping and handling aren't refunded. Rings bought from other retailers follow that retailer's policy. Oura's return FAQ says to cancel the membership when you return a ring. The Ring 4 Silver product page says canceling doesn't entitle you to a full or pro-rated refund of fees you've paid. Warranty replacements can't be returned for a refund.

More about this assessment

Oura Ring 4 is Oura's previous-generation smart ring, still sold on its US store at $349 in Silver. It tracks sleep, heart rate and temperature trends with red, green and infrared LEDs, a temperature sensor and an accelerometer. Oura rates the battery at 5 to 8 days. Full use of the app needs an Oura Membership, at $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year. That brings three years of ownership to about $559 before tax. Ring 5 is now on sale too, and Oura says it's 40% smaller, with greater accuracy and battery power.

Strengths on paper

  • Oura rates the battery at 5 to 8 days, and a typical charge takes 20 to 80 minutes
  • Red, green and infrared LEDs, plus a digital temperature sensor and an accelerometer
  • Titanium inner and outer surfaces, and water resistance to 100 m (328 ft)
  • Works with iOS and Android, and Oura offers a free sizing kit before you order

Limitations

  • The membership adds $69.99 a year, or about $210 over three years on top of the $349 ring
  • Bigger than Ring 5, which Oura says also has greater accuracy and battery power
  • The published sleep study cited here tested Gen3 hardware, not Ring 4, and Oura funded it
  • In that study, agreement with polysomnography on nightly deep and REM sleep totals was low (ICC 0.32 and 0.27)

Incomplete: energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That does not mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • The $69.99 yearly Oura Membership (US, before tax, per the Ring 4 page) is counted as an annual cost. Paying $5.99 monthly comes to $71.88 a year instead. The free first month for new members isn't deducted.
  • No replaceable parts or refills are listed, so annual consumables are $0. Oura doesn't state the charging power draw, so energy cost is unknown.
  • The estimate leaves out the optional 2-year ($45) or 3-year ($60) protection upgrade.

Evidence & sources.

How accurate are sleep trackers? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimPrice, sensors, battery life, dimensions, materials, membership pricing and what's in the box all come from Oura's own pages.12 Not independent testing.
  • Published studyA sleep-lab study compared the Oura Ring Gen3 (sleep staging algorithm 2.0) with overnight polysomnography in 35 healthy adults aged 20 to 50. The ring agreed with polysomnography on 76.3% of 30-second epochs for wake, light, deep and REM sleep (kappa 0.65). It estimated total sleep time about 9 minutes lower on average (421 vs 430 minutes), a difference that wasn't statistically significant.3 The study tested Gen3, not Ring 4. Oura Ring Inc. funded it, and the lead author serves on Oura's Medical Advisory Board. Sleep-versus-wake sensitivity was 95%, but agreement on nightly deep and REM totals was low (ICC 0.32 and 0.27). It covered a single night in 35 healthy adults without a sleep disorder, so results may differ in other groups.
