COST TO OWN

How much does a cold plunge cost to buy and run?

A cold plunge’s price depends mostly on the chiller. An ice barrel with no chiller is about $1,150. Tubs with a chiller cost about $4,000 to $16,500. Filters, water changes and electricity add to that every year, and most makers publish only part of those costs. This page lists the prices, the running costs each review records and what no maker prices.

The bottom line

The cold plunges we review cost $1,149.99 for an ice barrel with no chiller and $3,999 to $16,500 for a tub with one. Filters add about $60 to $425 a year where a review prices them. Electricity is mostly unpublished, and no maker prices the dedicated circuit most chillers need.

How much does a cold plunge cost?

Prices in the reviews fall into three bands. An Ice Barrel 300 is $1,149.99 and has no chiller, so you cool it with ice1. Tubs with a chiller start at $3,999 for Sun Home’s inflatable Horizontal and reach $7,990 for the Plunge All-In23. Premium tubs cost $10,990 to $16,50045.

These are list prices from each maker, checked in October 2026, before tax. Four were sale prices when checked, marked below, and a sale price can end, so the review shows the current one. Most makers list free delivery, usually to the curb. Ice Barrel lists a $300 shipping rate to the contiguous US, and Plunge charges a flat fee for in-home delivery outside its core zones13.

How the three-year cost is calculated

Every cold plunge review has a three-year estimate built the same way: purchase + installation + 3 × annual consumables + 3 × annual other costs + electricity. Electricity is (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × 365 × 3 × your price per kWh. The calculator starts at $0.18 per kWh, an editable assumption rather than your local rate. The US Energy Information Administration puts the average US residential price at 17.3 cents per kWh for 2025 and projects 18.2 cents for 202611.

Enter zero only when a cost is known to be zero. A missing value leaves an incomplete subtotal, not a smaller total. Most cold plunge reviews have unknown installation and electricity, so their totals are subtotals.

What a cold plunge costs to run

Filters are the running cost most makers price. Nordic Wave says to change its filter monthly, and a 12-pack was $59.99 on sale against $79.99712. Sun Home’s filter 3-pack is $49 and it says to change a filter every 2 to 4 weeks. With daily plunging and a change every 2 weeks, that is 26 filters, or $424.67 a year. A change every 4 weeks is about $212.3313.

Polar Monkeys says to replace its cartridge every 3 to 4 weeks, which is 13 to 17 a year. It doesn’t say which pack the Brainpod 2.0 takes, so the review leaves filters unpriced14. Its Sirona sanitizer, oxidizer and pH bottles are $39 each, or $169 for a six-month kit, with no stated bottle life15. Renu’s 12-pack of XL secondary filters is $165, and its manual gives no replacement interval for it1617. Plunge and BlueCube include a starter kit and don’t price refills356. Without a chiller, the Ice Barrel’s running cost is ice, and Ice Barrel doesn’t say how much a fill takes1.

Few makers publish a power figure you can use. Renu’s cut sheet gives a 24-hour average of 130 W while holding 40°F. Run around the clock, that is about 1,139 kWh a year, or about $205 at $0.18 per kWh18. Renu doesn’t state the room temperature or cover use behind that number, and its manual gives 350 to 500 W while the chiller runs17. Polar Monkeys rates its chiller at 1,120 W and Sun Home rates the Horizontal’s at about 1,320 W. Those are ratings, not averages1419. Plunge, Nordic Wave and BlueCube publish no wattage357.

Water changes cost something no maker prices. Sun Home’s manual says to drain and refill every 2 to 3 weeks, Polar Monkeys says monthly with its sanitizer or every two weeks without, and Renu says every 3 to 6 months141719.

Installation, delivery and the floor

Every chiller tub in the reviews plugs into a household outlet, but most makers ask for or recommend a dedicated circuit. The Plunge All-In needs a dedicated 120 V, 15 A circuit, Renu recommends one, and Polar Monkeys calls for a GFCI-protected 120 V, 15 A circuit. Sun Home asks for a dedicated 15 A GFCI circuit, and BlueCube a dedicated 120 V, 20 A outlet35141719. No maker prices adding one. Sun Home’s manual says a licensed electrician should do the electrical work19. Nordic Wave says its chiller runs from a standard 120 V outlet with no electrical upgrades, though it doesn’t give amperage7.

Delivery and placement differ. Polar Monkeys includes white-glove delivery to the room you choose20. Renu and BlueCube ship free to the curb, and Renu says you move the tub off the pallet yourself5921. Nordic Wave’s White Glove delivery is an optional upgrade, and its page doesn’t give a price7. A filled tub is heavy: about 700 lb for the Ice Barrel, 1,150 lb for the Plunge All-In and about 1,155 lb for the Renu1318. Sun Home’s manual asks for a surface that supports 3,000 lb under the Horizontal19.

Three examples

These subtotals use only the costs each review records. None includes the electrician, and each leaves out something different, so they aren’t the full cost of owning the tub.
