COST TO OWN

What a home sauna costs to own over three years

A home sauna’s price tag is only part of what it costs to own. Most cabins need a dedicated circuit, which can mean paying an electrician. A traditional heater can also need new stones and elements over time. Electricity is the main running cost, but most makers publish only a power rating. This page explains the three-year estimate on every sauna review.

The bottom line

The estimate is the purchase and installation, plus three years of parts and fees, plus electricity at an editable $0.18 per kWh. Installation and electricity are the gaps: no maker prices the electrical work, and most publish only a power rating. So most three-year totals stay incomplete.

How the three-year cost is calculated

Parts and fees are a small part of the cost. None of the reviews records a required subscription, and only the traditional saunas list parts that wear out9. Only the Signature I and Grandview reviews include an electricity estimate28. Below, we explain the calculation, work through an example and list the recurring costs each review records.

Every sauna review has a three-year estimate built the same way. Three-year cost = purchase + installation + 3 × annual consumables + 3 × annual other costs + electricity. Electricity is (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × 365 × 3 × your price per kWh.

Consumables are recurring parts such as sauna stones or heating elements. Other costs are subscriptions and memberships. The calculator starts at $0.18 per kWh, an editable assumption rather than your local rate. The US Energy Information Administration puts the average US residential price at 17.3 cents per kWh for 2025 and projects 18.2 cents for 20261. Use the rate on your bill if you know it.

Enter zero only when a cost is known to be zero. A missing value leaves an incomplete subtotal, not a smaller total. Taxes, shipping, financing and resale value are left out unless you add them.

How much electricity does a sauna use?

Sauna makers publish a rated wattage, not an average draw. Once the room is hot, a thermostat cycles the heater on and off, so it doesn’t draw full power the whole time. That makes the rating times your time in use a ceiling, not a measured bill.

Warm-up time counts. Sunlighten suggests preheating its cabins for 45 to 60 minutes256. Almost Heaven says the Salem takes 45 to 60 minutes to reach up to 194°F3. Sun Home says the outdoor Luminar 2 warms up in 15 to 20 minutes, or 60 minutes or more below 40°F28.

For infrared cabins, the ceiling per session is small. At full power and $0.18 per kWh, a 45-minute preheat and 40-minute session cost at most 34 cents in the 1,350 W Signature I2. The same session tops out at about 48 cents in the 1,880 W Amplify II and 88 cents in the 3,465 W Amplify RED III56. A traditional heater draws far more. At full power, the Salem’s 6 kW heater uses 81 cents to $1.08 of electricity just to heat up3.

A worked example

These made-up numbers show the math, not a real sauna. Take a $500 purchase with $100 of installation. Add $60 a year in supplies and a $20 yearly fee. The device draws 50 W for 8 hours a day, and electricity costs $0.20 per kWh. Over three years that comes to $927.60, and $87.60 of it is electricity.

At the $0.18 default, electricity costs $78.84 instead, and the total falls to $918.84. If the installation cost were unknown, the known subtotal would be $827.60. That’s an incomplete figure, not the full cost of owning it.

Worked example: three years at $0.20 per kWh
ItemHow it’s figuredThree years
PurchasePaid once$500.00
InstallationPaid once$100.00
Supplies3 × $60$180.00
Yearly fee3 × $20$60.00
Electricity50 W × 8 h × 365 × 3 = 438 kWh, at $0.20$87.60
TotalSum of the above$927.60

Two real estimates

Sunlighten’s Signature I has the fullest figures among the cabins. It was $4,999 on sale, and Sunlighten lists no required replacement part or subscription27. The review assumes Sunlighten’s suggested 40-minute daily session plus a 45-minute preheat, about 1.4 hours a day2. At the 1,350 W rating, that’s about 690 kWh a year, or $124 at $0.18 per kWh.

Over three years, that’s about $373 of electricity at most. The known subtotal is about $5,372. Sunlighten’s own figure of 15 to 35 cents an hour gives $77 to $179 a year instead2. Installation stays unknown. If you need a dedicated 120 V, 20 A circuit added, Sunlighten doesn’t price that work2.

Almost Heaven’s Grandview shows what a big heater adds. Its base build is $9,083 with an 8 kW heater8. Harvia says the stones may need replacing after 5 years, and Almost Heaven sells a 40 lb box for $163910. The review spreads that over 5 years, about $33 a year. Neither KIP manual says how many pounds of stones the heater holds, so one box may not be a full refill911.

The Grandview review assumes about 0.75 hours a day at the full 8 kW. That’s 2,190 kWh a year, or about $394 at $0.18 per kWh, and it’s a ceiling. Over three years, that’s about $98 of stones and $1,183 of electricity. The known subtotal comes to about $10,363. Installation is the missing piece: Almost Heaven’s installation partner charges from $1,400 for assembly, and the electrical hookup is an add-on at extra cost12.

Recurring costs across the lineup

The table lists the parts, fees and power ratings each sauna review records, with prices checked on October 13, 2026. Optional extras are marked as optional and aren’t counted in the yearly figures. Where a maker doesn’t publish a figure, the table says so.

The infrared cabins list no parts that wear out on a schedule, and no review records a required fee. Their running cost is mostly electricity. The traditional saunas add stones, and the Salem review also prices a heating element. Harvia calls the elements consumable but gives no replacement interval9.

Sauna blanket vs cabin: the cost gap

On cost, a blanket is the low-commitment choice. The HigherDOSE blanket is $699, with nothing to install and no required parts or fees3034. MiHIGH’s was $179 on sale, though both colors were sold out when checked32. Neither maker publishes power draw, so electricity stays unknown for both3033.

Among cabins with a published price, the Signature I was lowest at $4,999 on sale7. Health Mate’s Enrich 2 lists at $5,300 and plugs into a standard 15 A outlet, so it may need no electrical work24. Most other cabins need a dedicated circuit, and the outdoor ones need a base or pad as well2435.

Installation is the usual gap

Installation is the cost the sauna estimates most often lack. Sunlighten tells you to book an electrician for a dedicated circuit but doesn’t price the work5. Sun Home’s manual says a licensed electrician should install the Equinox’s dedicated GFCI circuit, and Sun Home doesn’t price that either36. The Luminar 2 needs a 240 V circuit from a licensed electrician and a level, draining pad rated for at least 1,500 lb428.

HigherDOSE’s three-person cabin needs a dedicated 240 V, 15 A circuit with a NEMA 6-15 outlet49. HigherDOSE doesn’t include installation and doesn’t price the electrical work or delivery indoors49. Its $999 curbside freight also comes on top of the $8,999 price4951.

The traditional saunas need more site work. Each heater must be wired to 240 V by a licensed electrician381735. Each sauna also needs a firm, level base that holds over 1,000 lb3537. The Timberline’s roof ships with felt only, so shingles or metal roofing cost extra37. Almost Heaven’s installation service starts at $1,400 for assembly and setup, with the electrical hookup extra12.

Plug-in cabins can still cost something. Health Mate quotes inside delivery and white-glove delivery separately24. The Enrich 2 and both Sanctuary cabins run close to their outlet’s rating212324. If that outlet shares its circuit with other loads, you may need electrical work. Blankets are the exception: there’s nothing to assemble or wire in, so installation is $03033.

Repairs and returns sit outside the estimate

The estimate doesn’t include repairs, but warranty terms decide who pays for them. Sunlighten’s warranty covers parts, not labor, and you pay the freight on parts38. Health Mate’s manual puts warranty labor and parts shipping both ways on the owner39. Sun Home covers labor and shipping only for the first 90 days40. Almost Heaven doesn’t cover an electrician’s time on a warranty claim41.

Clearlight covers parts and shipping for life, and its Sanctuary manual sets labor at 7 years for indoor use4243. HigherDOSE promises 5 years on its cabin, but its warranty page has no sauna terms4449. Blanket warranties are short. HigherDOSE gives its blanket one year and excludes liquid damage44. MiHIGH gives 12 months from the day the blanket is dispatched45.

A change of mind can cost more than $1,000. Health Mate’s 20% restocking charge is about $1,060 on the Enrich 2 at list, and you pay return shipping46. Sun Home takes back only unopened cabins and keeps 25% plus shipping both ways40. That’s about $1,525 on the $6,099 Equinox, before shipping.

HigherDOSE charges the highest rate. It keeps 30% of an unopened cabin, about $2,700 on the three-person model, and you pay return shipping50. Sunlighten can charge a 3% fee, $499 restocking, storage and return freight, also on unopened cabins only47.
