Choose ifYou want a Wi-Fi scale that syncs weight and body composition to Garmin Connect and can serve up to 16 people. You want fat and muscle readings by body zone, an ECG function and blood oxygen from one scale.
Main trade-offIt costs $199.99, Garmin publishes no accuracy figure for the body composition readings, and every extra user needs a Garmin Connect account. It costs $599.95, its DEXA figure comes from a study of the earlier Body Scan, and the newest scores and Apple Health sync for new accounts need Withings+.
Key specifications
  • Body composition method: Bioelectrical impedance. A small current runs from one foot through the body to the other foot, and Garmin lists no handle or hand electrodes. The pages checked give no frequency or electrode count. It reports body mass index, body fat %, body water %, skeletal muscle mass and bone mass, plus a 30-day weight trend. Garmin says bone mass is calculated from your age and lean body mass
  • Weighing: Units: pounds, kilograms or stones and pounds, set with a switch on the underside. Maximum load 400 lb (181.4 kg). The pages checked give no display step or weight tolerance
  • Profile inputs and modes: Uses date of birth, gender, height and activity level from your Garmin Connect profile. An activity class of 8 to 10 turns on Athlete Mode, which Garmin's FAQ names when body fat reads lower than expected. With socks on, the scale records only weight and BMI. A weight-only option turns off the other body composition data
  • Users: Up to 16 people. The person who set up the scale invites up to 15 others in Garmin Connect. Each needs a Garmin Connect account and a connection to that person. Guest data isn't stored or synced. The scale tells users apart by weight and how often each person weighs in, so similar users can be mixed up
  • Connectivity and app: Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) syncs readings to Garmin Connect, and the scale stores up to seven networks. Garmin's spec also lists Bluetooth LE and ANT. Setup and settings are in the Garmin Connect app. The pages checked give no minimum phone operating system
  • Battery: Four AAA alkaline batteries, included. Garmin says they last up to 9 months and tells you to use 1.5 V cells
  • Display: A high-resolution color display that steps through your readings every few seconds, plus a weather widget that needs Wi-Fi. Garmin doesn't state its size or resolution
  • In the box: Index S2, four AAA batteries, four carpet feet and documentation
  • Body composition method: Multi-frequency bioimpedance spectroscopy at 13 frequencies up to 800 kHz, against 3 frequencies up to 250 kHz on the earlier Body Scan, per Withings. It uses 12 electrodes, 8 in the platform and 4 in the handle, so the current runs from hands to feet. It reports fat and muscle for six body zones (arms, legs, torso and abdomen). Whole-body readings are body fat %, body water %, muscle mass, bone mass, visceral fat index and basal metabolic rate
  • Weighing: Four weight sensors. Range 9 to 440 lb (5 to 200 kg) in 0.1 lb (50 g) steps. Units: kg, lb and st lb
  • ECG, SpO2 and cardiovascular features: 6-lead ECG recorded over 30 seconds while you stand on the scale and hold the handle. SpO2 from a light sensor under your left thumb, which Withings calls a wellness feature. Also standing heart rate, pulse wave velocity, vascular age and a Nerve Response Score from the foot electrodes. In the US, Blood Pressure Insights notifications are a wellness score that Withings says doesn't measure your blood pressure
  • Scan modes: A Daily Scan takes about 30 seconds and covers weight, segmental body composition, heart rate and pulse wave velocity by default. A Longevity Scan takes about 2 minutes, is offered every 7 days and adds ECG, SpO2, vascular age and the Nerve Response Score. Body composition, SpO2, ECG and Heart and Vascular Age need the handle. Without it you still get weight, BMI, pulse wave velocity and the Nerve Response Score
  • Users and modes: Recognizes up to 8 users. The product page lists Athlete and Baby modes and says Pregnancy and Eyes Closed modes are coming, while a support article lists Weight-Only, Athlete and Pregnancy modes. Body composition is only available to people 16 or older
  • Connectivity and app: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The product page lists Bluetooth as coming soon, but Withings' installation guide pairs the scale over Bluetooth and offers a Bluetooth-only option. Needs the Withings app on iOS 18 or later, or Android 12 or later. Stores up to 16 readings when it can't sync
  • Display: A 640 x 172 pixel color LCD in the handle, with two thumb buttons. Withings gives its size as 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5 in on different pages
  • Battery and charging: Built-in rechargeable 3.7 V, 2,500 mAh lithium-ion battery that Withings says lasts up to 1 year per charge. A full charge takes up to 5 hours over the USB cable provided, and you can't use the scale while it charges
  • Features that need Withings+: Heart Age and Glucose Resilience need a Withings+ subscription. Withings' FAQ of Jul 12, 2026 marks Glucose Resilience as coming soon, and the product page says feature availability depends on software updates. The product page's Withings+ box lists ECG cardiologist reviews, with 4 included. Baseline data and trends stay free
Exact variantIndex S2 Smart Scale, black (010-02294-02, also sold in white), Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, four AAA batteries includedBodyScan 2 with retractable handle and handle display, black, Wi-Fi, rechargeable
Dimensions12.6 x 12.2 x 1.1 in (320 x 310 x 28 mm) and 4.4 lb (2.0 kg), per the specs tab of Garmin's product page. The maximum load is 400 lb (181.4 kg).12.8 x 14.1 x 0.7 in (325 x 357 x 18.5 mm), per Withings' product page. The page's comparison chart gives a total weight of 7.5 lb for the BodyScan 2. The weighing capacity is 440 lb (200 kg).
InstallationNo installation beyond setup. You pair the scale through the Garmin Connect app and connect it to a compatible Wi-Fi router. Garmin says you need both before you can use all its features. Garmin lists a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radio. The four AAA batteries are in the box, and so are four carpet feet for carpeted floors. Garmin recommends a hard, flat floor for the most accurate weight. No installation. You set it up in the Withings app, with Bluetooth on, location permission and your Wi-Fi password. The app pairs the scale with a 6-digit code and then connects it to Wi-Fi. Withings recommends Wi-Fi, and says a scale set up without it loses most of its functions. It can't be set up from a computer. In the US, the ECG function needs its own activation. You give your state and a US phone number, and a board-certified cardiologist reviews your first ECG at no added cost. Withings says that US activation is for scales bought from a US retailer or online store.
MaterialsA glass surface, per Garmin's manual and support FAQ. Garmin says wearing shoes or heels can damage the glass. The product page offers black and white designs. Other materials are not stated by the manufacturer.A reinforced aluminum chassis with a large glass platform, per Withings' product page, which calls the platform both high-strength tempered glass and ITO glass. It lists 12 integrated electrodes: 8 ITO electrodes and 4 stainless steel electrodes. The handle's materials are not stated by the manufacturer. The box holds the BodyScan 2, a USB-C cable and a quick installation guide.
WarrantyOne year from the date of purchase, per Garmin's Consumer Limited Warranty. The terms, revised Dec 30, 2025, cover Garmin's non-aviation products and don't name the Index S2. Garmin chooses whether to repair it, replace it with a new or Garmin Recertified device, or refund the purchase price. The warranty excludes cosmetic damage, batteries unless a defect damaged the product, and damage from accident, abuse, misuse or water. You pay shipping to Garmin. A repaired or replacement device is covered for 90 days or the rest of the original year, whichever is longer. In the US, it covers only devices bought from Garmin or an authorized US reseller.2-year quality guarantee, per Withings' product page. The US store's terms of sale describe legal warranties under French law. They give no US warranty terms, so conditions, exclusions and claim steps weren't confirmed.
Returns30 days from receipt of a Garmin.com order, per Garmin's shipping and returns page. The scale must be in its original condition, and you start the return online with a return request. Garmin says opened software, downloadable items and custom products can't be refunded. The page doesn't say who pays return shipping. Bought from another store, the scale goes back to that store under its own policy, and Garmin says restocking fees may apply.30 days from receipt, per Withings' refund policy. One clause counts the 30 days from receipt and another from the purchase date. You start the return from your Withings account, print the label and send back the product with all its original items. The product page says free shipping and returns, but the policy says you pay return shipping after a withdrawal, so check the label cost first. Refunds go to the original payment method. Withings+ payments already made are non-refundable, with an exception if you weren't told about automatic renewal.
Unresolved questions
  • Any accuracy figure or DEXA comparison for the Index S2. Garmin gives none on the pages checked, and a Europe PMC search on Oct 24, 2026 found no study that validated it
  • The data behind Garmin's claim that its readings compare favorably with DEXA, since it comes from a forum reply that names no study or figure
  • The frequency, electrodes and equations behind the readings, which Garmin doesn't publish
  • Whether the weight-only option stops the current
  • Whether the limit is 16 people in total or 16 besides the person who set up the scale, since Garmin words it both ways
  • The weight display step, a weight tolerance and the display size and resolution
  • What replacement AAA batteries cost, since Garmin doesn't price them
  • Which phone operating system versions Garmin Connect needs for setup
  • Who pays return shipping on a Garmin.com return
  • Any BodyScan 2 comparison with DEXA. Withings' 99% figure is from its internal study of the earlier Body Scan, with no bias or limits of agreement on the pages checked
  • Whether an independent study has compared the BodyScan 2's body composition with DEXA (none turned up in a Europe PMC search on Oct 24, 2026)
  • Whether the FDA counts the 2023 Scan Monitor 2.0 clearance (K230812) as covering the BodyScan 2, since its summary names the Body Scan
  • Whether Glucose Resilience, which Withings' FAQ of Jul 12, 2026 marks as coming soon, is live yet, and which other listed features are
  • The terms of Withings' 2-year quality guarantee in the US
  • Whether returns are free, and whether the 30 days count from receipt or purchase, since Withings' pages disagree
  • Whether the scale has 12 electrodes (the product page and FAQ) or 8 (one support article)
  • The handle display size, which Withings gives as 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5 in
  • Whether Bluetooth sync works yet, and which modes are live
  • Charging power draw
