Choose ifYou want a Wi-Fi scale that syncs weight and body composition to Garmin Connect and can serve up to 16 people. You want a low-cost scale that records weight trends and sends body readings to a free app.
Main trade-offIt costs $199.99, Garmin publishes no accuracy figure for the body composition readings, and every extra user needs a Garmin Connect account. It reads through the feet only, Renpho gives no body-fat accuracy figure, and only weight shows on the scale.
Key specifications
  • Body composition method: Bioelectrical impedance. A small current runs from one foot through the body to the other foot, and Garmin lists no handle or hand electrodes. The pages checked give no frequency or electrode count. It reports body mass index, body fat %, body water %, skeletal muscle mass and bone mass, plus a 30-day weight trend. Garmin says bone mass is calculated from your age and lean body mass
  • Weighing: Units: pounds, kilograms or stones and pounds, set with a switch on the underside. Maximum load 400 lb (181.4 kg). The pages checked give no display step or weight tolerance
  • Profile inputs and modes: Uses date of birth, gender, height and activity level from your Garmin Connect profile. An activity class of 8 to 10 turns on Athlete Mode, which Garmin's FAQ names when body fat reads lower than expected. With socks on, the scale records only weight and BMI. A weight-only option turns off the other body composition data
  • Users: Up to 16 people. The person who set up the scale invites up to 15 others in Garmin Connect. Each needs a Garmin Connect account and a connection to that person. Guest data isn't stored or synced. The scale tells users apart by weight and how often each person weighs in, so similar users can be mixed up
  • Connectivity and app: Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) syncs readings to Garmin Connect, and the scale stores up to seven networks. Garmin's spec also lists Bluetooth LE and ANT. Setup and settings are in the Garmin Connect app. The pages checked give no minimum phone operating system
  • Battery: Four AAA alkaline batteries, included. Garmin says they last up to 9 months and tells you to use 1.5 V cells
  • Display: A high-resolution color display that steps through your readings every few seconds, plus a weather widget that needs Wi-Fi. Garmin doesn't state its size or resolution
  • In the box: Index S2, four AAA batteries, four carpet feet and documentation
  • Body composition method: Bioelectrical impedance through 4 electrodes in the platform. Renpho says current runs up through one foot, into the lower body and down the other foot, and the upper body is estimated with algorithms. The app shows 13 metrics: weight, BMI, body fat %, body water %, skeletal muscle, fat-free body weight, muscle mass, bone mass, protein, basal metabolic rate, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat and metabolic age. Renpho doesn't state the frequency
  • Weighing: 6.6 to 400 lb (3 to 180 kg) in 0.1 lb (0.05 kg) steps. Units: lb and kg. Renpho's manual page lists the ES-CS20M among its models. It gives weight accuracy of ±0.3 kg at 50 kg, ±0.4 kg at 100 kg and ±0.5 kg at 150 kg
  • Display: LED display. Renpho lists weight as the one body metric shown on the scale; the other 12 are in the app
  • Users and ages: Unlimited profiles in the app, with automatic user recognition. The manual page says children under 10 and adults over 70 get weighing only, while Renpho's collection FAQ says children under 8
  • Connectivity and app: Bluetooth, version 5 per the manual page. Works only with the Renpho Health app, which the App Store lists as requiring iOS 15.1 or later. The App Store also lists Apple Watch. Syncs with Apple Health, Fitbit, Samsung Health and MyFitnessPal
  • Battery: Three AAA batteries, included. Renpho gives a battery life of up to 4.5 months
  • Use guidance: Bare feet on the electrodes, a hard flat surface, and weighing at the same time each day. The scale switches off after 10 seconds. Renpho says to recalibrate it if it has been moved or turned upside down
  • In the box: Elis 1 Smart Body Scale, three AAA batteries and a manual
Exact variantIndex S2 Smart Scale, black (010-02294-02, also sold in white), Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, four AAA batteries includedElis 1 (ES-CS20M by Renpho's part number), three AAA batteries included
Dimensions12.6 x 12.2 x 1.1 in (320 x 310 x 28 mm) and 4.4 lb (2.0 kg), per the specs tab of Garmin's product page. The maximum load is 400 lb (181.4 kg).The scale's size and weight are unknown. Renpho's product page lists only a 400 lb capacity.
InstallationNo installation beyond setup. You pair the scale through the Garmin Connect app and connect it to a compatible Wi-Fi router. Garmin says you need both before you can use all its features. Garmin lists a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radio. The four AAA batteries are in the box, and so are four carpet feet for carpeted floors. Garmin recommends a hard, flat floor for the most accurate weight. No installation. The three AAA batteries are included. Put the scale on a hard, flat floor, since Renpho says carpet causes inaccurate readings. Download the free Renpho Health app, create an account or use guest mode, and pair the scale over Bluetooth while standing on it with bare feet.
MaterialsA glass surface, per Garmin's manual and support FAQ. Garmin says wearing shoes or heels can damage the glass. The product page offers black and white designs. Other materials are not stated by the manufacturer.Glass, per Renpho's product page. Renpho's manual page, which covers several scale models, lists tempered glass with HIPS plastic.
WarrantyOne year from the date of purchase, per Garmin's Consumer Limited Warranty. The terms, revised Dec 30, 2025, cover Garmin's non-aviation products and don't name the Index S2. Garmin chooses whether to repair it, replace it with a new or Garmin Recertified device, or refund the purchase price. The warranty excludes cosmetic damage, batteries unless a defect damaged the product, and damage from accident, abuse, misuse or water. You pay shipping to Garmin. A repaired or replacement device is covered for 90 days or the rest of the original year, whichever is longer. In the US, it covers only devices bought from Garmin or an authorized US reseller.18 months from the original retail purchase for buyers in the US and Canada, per Renpho's warranty terms. They apply to scales bought on Renpho's own site, and other sales channels may differ. The product page also says 18 months, but Renpho's manual page still says one year. Renpho repairs, replaces or refunds at its choice. Batteries made to diminish over time, cosmetic damage, accidents, liquid contact and unauthorized service aren't covered.
Returns30 days from receipt of a Garmin.com order, per Garmin's shipping and returns page. The scale must be in its original condition, and you start the return online with a return request. Garmin says opened software, downloadable items and custom products can't be refunded. The page doesn't say who pays return shipping. Bought from another store, the scale goes back to that store under its own policy, and Garmin says restocking fees may apply.30 days from delivery, per Renpho's shipping and returns page. If you return the scale for a personal reason, it must be unused and in its original packaging. You pay return shipping, and Renpho charges no restocking fee. If it arrives damaged or defective within 30 days, Renpho pays return shipping and gives a full refund or a free replacement. Contact support first, and Renpho then sends a prepaid label.
Unresolved questions
  • Any accuracy figure or DEXA comparison for the Index S2. Garmin gives none on the pages checked, and a Europe PMC search on Oct 24, 2026 found no study that validated it
  • The data behind Garmin's claim that its readings compare favorably with DEXA, since it comes from a forum reply that names no study or figure
  • The frequency, electrodes and equations behind the readings, which Garmin doesn't publish
  • Whether the weight-only option stops the current
  • Whether the limit is 16 people in total or 16 besides the person who set up the scale, since Garmin words it both ways
  • The weight display step, a weight tolerance and the display size and resolution
  • What replacement AAA batteries cost, since Garmin doesn't price them
  • Which phone operating system versions Garmin Connect needs for setup
  • Who pays return shipping on a Garmin.com return
  • Accuracy of the scale's body composition readings: Renpho gives no figure, and no study naming the Elis 1 was found
  • Which RENPHO scale the 2023 study tested
  • The impedance frequency
  • Which age limit applies to body readings: the manual page says under 10 and over 70 get weighing only, and the collection FAQ says under 8
  • Whether the warranty is 18 months, as the warranty terms and product page say, or the one year in the manual page
  • Shipping cost for a single scale, and how return shipping is charged for a personal-reason return
  • What replacement AAA batteries cost, since Renpho doesn't price them
  • Whether the app has any optional paid feature, since Renpho calls it completely free
  • The scale's size and weight
