The verdict

Fitbit Air is a $99.99 band with no screen that tracks heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen and sleep for up to 7 days per charge. It suits you if you want the data without a watch on your wrist. The catch is that Google's coach costs extra after 3 months, and Google doesn't say the AFib alerts are FDA-cleared.

The trade-off

You read everything in the app, and Google's coach costs extra after the 3 free months.

The Special Edition versions are separate options, and extra bands are sold separately.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want sleep, heart rate and blood oxygen tracking for about $100 from a 12 g band with no screen.

  • You want heart rate, sleep and blood oxygen tracking from a light band with no screen
  • You want to spend about $100 and try Google's Premium coach free for 3 months
  • You may switch between Android and iPhone, since it works with Android 11 and iOS 16.4 or later
  • You want a band light enough to wear to bed (12 g with the band)

THINK TWICE IF

  • Anyone who wants to see the time or messages on the wrist, or built-in GPS, since Google's spec sheet lists no display or GPS
  • Anyone who wants an ECG or an FDA-cleared feature, since the Fitbit Air pages mention neither
  • Anyone who wants Google's AI coach long term without paying, since Premium is free only for 3 months
  • Anyone without a smartphone or a Google Account, since setup needs both
What still needs checking
  • The US warranty length for Fitbit Air, since Google's Hardware Warranty Center doesn't name it
  • Premium's billing period, and whether the free months roll into a paid plan
  • Which Health Guardian features count as advanced and need Premium
  • Whether FDA's 2022 clearance of Fitbit Irregular Rhythm Notifications, which lists older devices, covers Fitbit Air
  • Independent accuracy data for Fitbit Air's heart rate, blood oxygen and sleep tracking
  • Test conditions behind the 7-day battery figure
  • Charger power draw and battery lifespan

The practical details.

WarrantyGoogle's Fitbit Limited Warranty page says Fitbit devices bought on or after July…

Google's Fitbit Limited Warranty page says Fitbit devices bought on or after July 11, 2023 are covered through the Google Hardware Warranty Center. That center has an option for Fitbit hardware bought since that date, but it doesn't name Fitbit Air or give its warranty length. So the Air's US warranty isn't confirmed. The older Fitbit terms cover new products for one year from purchase. They exclude accidental damage, consumables such as batteries, normal wear and cosmetic damage such as scratches.

Google Store Help says most items can be returned within 15 days of the day you receive them. Before sending it back, you reset the device to factory settings. For a refund, it goes back in its original box with all accessories and documentation. The Fitbit Air page advertises free shipping and returns. The help page doesn't mention restocking fees.

More about this assessment

Google Fitbit Air is a fitness band with no display that starts at $99.99 and comes with 3 months of Google Health Premium. Google rates the battery at up to 7 days and lists heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen and skin temperature variation tracking. Tracking and the standard Health Guardian alerts are free in the app. After the free months, Premium starts at $9.99, and Google doesn't say whether that's monthly or yearly. Google says it looks for signs of AFib, but the Fitbit Air pages don't mention FDA clearance. FDA's 2022 clearance of Fitbit Irregular Rhythm Notifications lists older devices, not the Air.

Strengths on paper

  • $99.99 with 3 months of Google Health Premium included
  • Up to 7 days per charge, with about a day from a 5-minute charge
  • Tracking, Readiness and the standard Health Guardian alerts don't need Premium
  • Very light: 5.2 g for the tracker and 12 g with the band
  • Water resistant to 50 m
  • Blood oxygen, heart rate variability, breathing rate and skin temperature variation from a sub-$100 band
  • Works with Android and iPhone

Limitations

  • No display, so you check everything in the app
  • Google suggests charging every few days for continuous tracking, despite the 7-day rating
  • Premium's price after the free months is shown only as 'From $9.99', with no billing period
  • The Fitbit Air pages don't say whether its AFib check is FDA-cleared
  • Only 15 days to return it to the Google Store

Incomplete: energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That does not mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • The purchase price is $99.99 before tax, the Google Store's 'From' price for Fitbit Air. With no required fee or part listed, the three-year estimate is $99.99 plus charging energy, which is unknown.
  • Annual other costs are $0 because Google lists tracking as a free app feature and doesn't require Premium. The first 3 months of Premium are included. After that, Google lists it from $9.99 without a billing period, so it isn't annualized here.
  • Google lists no replaceable parts or refills, so annual consumables are $0. Extra bands are sold separately and aren't counted.
  • Google doesn't state the charger's power draw, so energy cost is unknown. A full charge takes about 90 minutes and lasts up to 7 days.
  • Google lists Fitbit Air as HSA/FSA eligible, except the Special Editions. The estimate doesn't deduct any tax saving.

Evidence & sources.

How accurate are sleep trackers? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimGoogle says Fitbit Air lasts up to 7 days per charge and is water resistant to 50 m. It lists an optical heart rate monitor, red and infrared blood oxygen sensors and a temperature sensor.2 Google gives no test conditions for the battery figure. It says heart rate accuracy varies with physiology, device placement and movement.
  • Manufacturer claimGoogle says Fitbit Air looks for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) while you're still or sleeping.1 Google lists Irregular Rhythm Notifications among the Air's Health Guardian alerts. Neither Fitbit Air page mentions FDA clearance or says how the feature was tested on this band.
  • Regulator recordFDA cleared Fitbit Irregular Rhythm Notifications through 510(k) K212372 on April 8, 2022. It's Class II, over-the-counter software that checks pulse data for irregular rhythms suggestive of AFib. It only captures that data while the wearer is still. It isn't for people under 22 or people already diagnosed with AFib. The study analyzed 225 people who got a positive detection while wearing a reference ECG patch. The algorithm's positive predictive value was 98.2%, with a 97.5% lower confidence bound of 96.4%.6 The clearance lists Fitbit Sense, Versa, Versa Lite, Inspire 2 and Charge 4, not Fitbit Air. FDA's summary says the feature doesn't notify on every episode, and no notification doesn't mean no AFib. It doesn't report sensitivity, and it says the feature doesn't replace traditional diagnosis.
