The verdict

Galaxy Watch9 is Samsung's smartwatch for Android phones, with an FDA-authorized sleep apnea alert and an ECG app. Samsung's buy page lists the 40mm at $429.99, and there's no listed fee for the health features. The catch is battery life: Samsung rates it at up to 30 hours with the always-on display on.

The trade-off

Expect to charge it about once a day, and blood pressure estimates need a separate cuff for calibration every 28 days.

About this price

Samsung's buy page listed the 40mm at $429.99 and the 44mm at $459.99, with no sale or 'was' wording. The page title names the Bluetooth model, but the text doesn't label the connection and shows Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile logos. The Galaxy Watch9 page says 'From $379.99 or $15.83/mo before trade-in'. Samsung's July 22 launch release put the Bluetooth model from $379.99 and LTE from $429.99. So $429.99 may be the 40mm LTE price, and the 40mm Bluetooth model may cost $379.99. Confirm the price at checkout. Prices are before tax and shipping, with no trade-in credit or financing deducted.

A GOOD FIT FOR

THINK TWICE IF

  • iPhone owners: Samsung lists its sleep apnea and bedtime features for Android 13 or later, and the page doesn't mention iPhone
  • Anyone under 22, pregnant or already diagnosed with sleep apnea, since Samsung says the sleep apnea feature isn't for them
  • Anyone under 22 or with a known arrhythmia other than AFib, for whom Samsung says the ECG app isn't intended
  • Anyone who wants blood pressure estimates without buying a cuff, since calibration needs one every 28 days
  • Anyone who wants several days per charge: Samsung rates it at up to 30 hours with the always-on display on
What still needs checking
  • Whether the buy page's $429.99 for the 40mm is the Bluetooth or the LTE price

  • The standard warranty length for a watch bought in the US
  • What's in the box, including whether a charger or power adapter comes with it
  • Band material, and whether the listed weight includes the band
  • Which version of the sleep apnea feature Galaxy Watch9 runs, since the FDA documents don't name it
  • Whether the ECG app and blood pressure feature on Galaxy Watch9 carry their own FDA status
  • The full list of sensors behind the BioActive sensor
  • Whether the watch works with an iPhone at all
  • The price of a compatible blood pressure cuff
  • Independent, peer-reviewed accuracy data for Galaxy Watch9

Before you buy

InstallationNo installation

No installation. It runs Google Wear OS. Samsung lists sleep apnea, Bedtime Guidance and Energy Score as available on Android phones running Android 13 or above. The Galaxy Watch9 page doesn't mention iPhone. Neither that page, the buy page nor the launch release lists what's in the box, so it's unclear whether a charger or power adapter comes with it.

WarrantySamsung's US warranty page gives no length for a watch bought in the US

Samsung's US warranty page gives no length for a watch bought in the US. Its only figure is a 'standard warranty 12-month period' in an FAQ on international service, which names watches launched in 2023 or later. The Standard Limited Warranty that Samsung links for this model doesn't state the period either. It covers the battery only if capacity falls below 80% of its rating.

ReturnsWatches bought on Samsung.com or the Shop Samsung app can be returned within 15 days…

Watches bought on Samsung.com or the Shop Samsung app can be returned within 15 days of delivery. Samsung charges a 5% restocking fee unless the return is for damage or a defect. Damage or defect claims are due within 5 days of delivery. Return shipping is free. The watch must be like new, factory reset and in its original packaging with everything that came in the box. Watches bought elsewhere follow that retailer's policy.

More about this assessment

Galaxy Watch9 is Samsung's Wear OS smartwatch for Android phones, with a sleep apnea alert and an ECG app. The buy page lists the 40mm at $429.99 without naming the connection, while the main page says 'From $379.99'. The FDA granted the sleep apnea feature a De Novo authorization in February 2024 for adults 22 and older. There's no listed fee for the health features, but blood pressure estimates need a separate cuff for calibration every 28 days. The catch is battery life: Samsung rates it at up to 30 hours with the always-on display on. Samsung.com returns close 15 days after delivery, with a 5% restocking fee.

Strengths on paper

  • No fee listed for the sleep, heart or blood pressure features
  • A sleep apnea alert with FDA De Novo authorization, for adults 22 and older
  • ECG app, blood pressure estimates, Bedtime Guidance, Energy Score and Vitals on one watch
  • Sapphire crystal display with brightness up to 3,000 nits
  • Samsung lists it at 8.6 mm thick, down from 9.7 mm for Galaxy Watch7
  • The 40 mm weighs 31.5 g and has an aluminum case
  • The 40 mm charges to 50% in 30 minutes, according to Samsung

Limitations

  • Samsung rates the battery at up to 30 hours with the always-on display on
  • Blood pressure needs calibration with a separate cuff every 28 days, and Samsung says it isn't for diagnosing disease
  • Sleep apnea, Bedtime Guidance and Energy Score need an Android phone on Android 13 or later
  • The sleep apnea alert is only for people 22 or older who aren't pregnant and haven't been diagnosed
  • Samsung says Bedtime Guidance and Vitals are for wellness only, and Heart Health Score isn't for diagnosing disease
  • The buy page lists the 40mm at $429.99 but doesn't say whether that's Bluetooth or LTE
  • Returns close 15 days after delivery, with a 5% restocking fee unless the watch is damaged or defective
  • Samsung doesn't state a US warranty length outright or list what's in the box

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That does not mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • The estimate uses $429.99, the 40mm price on Samsung's buy page, before tax. The buy page doesn't label Bluetooth or LTE, and Samsung's main page says 'From $379.99', so the Bluetooth model may cost $50 less. With no listed fee or part, the three-year estimate is $429.99 plus charging energy, which is unknown.
  • Other annual costs are $0 because the page lists no fee for the sleep apnea, ECG, blood pressure or sleep features. Optional iFIT premium content needs a paid subscription. The iFIT and Strava trial offers both turn into paid plans unless you cancel. Neither is included.
  • Blood pressure estimates need calibration every 28 days with a third-party cuff, sold separately. Samsung doesn't price the cuff, so it isn't in the estimate.
  • Annual consumables are $0 because Samsung lists no replaceable parts. That doesn't mean battery wear, replacement bands, repairs or Samsung Care+ cost nothing. Samsung's warranty covers the battery only if capacity falls below 80% of its rating. Samsung doesn't state the charger's power draw, so energy is unknown.
  • The estimate leaves out the up to $250 instant trade-in credit and financing. The Galaxy Watch9 page also mentions a $50 Samsung credit without trade-in, but its footnote dates that offer August 7 to September 27, 2026.

Evidence & sources.

How accurate are sleep trackers? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimSamsung calls its sleep apnea risk detection FDA-cleared and says the U.S. FDA regulates the Samsung Sleep Apnea Feature as a medical device. Samsung says Galaxy Watch9 'detects signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea risk'. The feature is for people 22 and older who haven't been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Samsung says not to use it if you're pregnant.13 This is Samsung's own description. The page lists the feature for Android 13 or above and says it needs at least 2 days of sleep data within 10 days. Samsung's launch release says the feature is 'backed by new FDA clearance'.
  • Regulator recordThe FDA granted Samsung's Sleep Apnea Feature a De Novo (DEN230041) on February 6, 2024, as a Class II over-the-counter device to assess sleep apnea risk. It's for adults 22 and older without a sleep apnea diagnosis, over two nights. In the FDA's review, it flagged 82.7% of people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (167 of 202). It correctly cleared 87.7% of people without it (235 of 268).78 The reference was polysomnography (PSG), with moderate to severe apnea defined as an AHI above 15. The specificity result didn't pass the study's acceptance criteria. A modified calculation raised it to 91.1%. Of 620 people enrolled, 47 didn't complete the study. The decision summary doesn't name Galaxy Watch9, which came out later.
  • Regulator recordOn July 20, 2026, the FDA cleared Sleep Apnea Feature v2.0 through 510(k) K261011, with the De Novo feature as its predicate. It's for users 18 and older and needs two nights of valid data within 10 days. In a study of 475 people wearing the watch, it flagged 90.8% of those with moderate to severe sleep apnea. It correctly cleared 90.3% of those without it.910 The 510(k) summary doesn't name Galaxy Watch9. Samsung's Galaxy Watch9 page still limits the feature to ages 22 and older, which matches the original De Novo. Samsung doesn't say which version Galaxy Watch9 runs.
  • Manufacturer claimSamsung says the ECG app is for adults 22 and older and isn't for people with known arrhythmias other than AFib. It says the blood pressure function isn't intended to diagnose disease or other conditions. Blood pressure needs calibration every 28 days with a third-party cuff, sold separately.1 The page doesn't give an FDA status for the ECG app or the blood pressure feature on Galaxy Watch9.
  • Manufacturer claimSamsung says Bedtime Guidance is for general wellness and fitness only, and that Vitals is for wellness only, not for diagnosing any medical condition. It says Heart Health Score isn't intended to diagnose disease, and the AGEs index is for personal reference only. Vitals needs at least 7 nights of sleep data.1 Samsung gives no FDA status for these features. No independent Galaxy Watch9 accuracy study was reviewed.
