The verdict

The Index Sleep Monitor puts Garmin's sleep, HRV status, Pulse Ox and skin temperature tracking in a washable upper-arm band, with up to 7 nights of battery and a vibrating smart wake alarm. The catch: Garmin says it isn't a medical device, and no accuracy figures for this band were readable on the pages checked. Garmin's US page showed no price, and REI listed it at $170.00 with both sizes sold out.

The trade-off

It's made for overnight tracking only, nothing on the pages checked confirms its accuracy, and Garmin's warranty and return terms couldn't be read.

About this price

Retailer price: REI listed the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor at $170.00 on Oct 13, 2026, one price for both sizes. There was no sale price, clearance price or crossed-out regular price. Both S/M and L/XL were marked "Sold out." REI's member rewards (an estimated $17.00) aren't deducted. Garmin's own US product page showed "Size: L/XL" and part numbers 010-03024-00 and 010-03024-01, without saying which size each is. It displayed no price when checked. Garmin's launch release of June 18, 2025 gave a suggested retail price of $169.99. Prices are before tax and shipping.

A GOOD FIT FOR

You want Garmin's overnight HRV status and sleep stages without a watch or ring in bed, especially if you own a Garmin watch and take it off at night.

  • You want overnight sleep, HRV status, Pulse Ox and skin temperature trends without a watch or ring in bed
  • You take your Garmin watch off at night and want the band to fill the gaps, which Garmin says works with a compatible Garmin smartwatch
  • You want a vibrating alarm that aims to wake you in lighter sleep during the 30 minutes before a set time

THINK TWICE IF

  • Anyone who wants daytime activity, step or workout tracking from the same device: Garmin presents it as a sleep band, and the pages checked don't describe daytime tracking
  • Anyone who can't avoid lying on the upper-arm module, since the manual says not to lie directly on it
  • Anyone looking to diagnose or monitor a medical condition: Garmin says it isn't a medical device, and the manual says to take breathing-variation concerns to a doctor or healthcare provider
  • Anyone who'd rather not use Garmin Connect, since the manual says the band must be paired with that app for its connected features
What still needs checking
  • Garmin's own current US price, and when REI or other retailers will have stock
  • Warranty length and return window, since Garmin's warranty page and its Shipping, Returns & Refunds page didn't display their terms when checked
  • Whether any listed feature needs a paid Garmin Connect+ plan
  • Module dimensions, weight and onboard data storage
  • Garmin's own arm-circumference fit range for each size, since the manual gives only band lengths and the fit ranges above come from REI's listing
  • Accuracy against polysomnography for this band (FDA databases weren't checked, because Garmin doesn't claim clearance)

The practical details.

Band careTake the module out first. Machine-wash the band in a washing or mesh laundry bag on the gentle cycle, in warm water up to 104°F (40°C), with a small amount of mild detergent. No bleach, harsh detergents or fabric softener. If you air dry it, hang it up or lay it flat. The module must not go in the washing machine or dryer.
DimensionsThe L/XL band measures 45.2 x 6.4 x 0.06 cm (17.8 x 2.5 x 0.02 in). The S/M band measures 32.6 x 6.4 x 0.06 cm (12.8 x 2.5 x 0.02 in). Garmin's manual gives no arm-circumference fit range. REI's listing says S/M fits an upper-arm circumference of 8 to 11.7 in (20 to 29 cm), and L/XL fits 10.5 to 16.6 in (26 to 42 cm). Garmin doesn't state the module's dimensions or weight on the pages checked.
MaterialsA removable sensor module sits in a pocket of a machine-washable band with hook-and-loop closures. Garmin doesn't state the band fabric or the module housing materials on the pages checked.

Before you buy

InstallationNo installation

No installation. Pair the module with the Garmin Connect smartphone app, keeping the phone within 10 m (33 ft) while pairing. An LED on the module shows pairing status. Tapping the module puts it in pairing mode and snoozes or stops the alarm. Wear the band on the upper arm, above the elbow, with the module facing out on the outside of the arm. Keep it lightly snug but not overtightened. Avoid lying directly on the module.

WarrantyNot confirmed

Not confirmed. Neither the owner's manual nor the launch release states a warranty period. Garmin's US Consumer Limited Warranty page loads its terms with JavaScript, so they couldn't be read. Check that page before buying.

ReturnsNot confirmed

Not confirmed. Neither the owner's manual nor the launch release states a return window. Garmin's Shipping, Returns & Refunds page, linked from the US product page, loads its terms with JavaScript, so the policy couldn't be read. Check that page, or the retailer's policy, before buying.

More about this assessment

The Index Sleep Monitor is Garmin's sleep tracker for people who don't wear a watch at night. A washable band holds the sensor module on your upper arm, and Garmin says the battery lasts up to 7 nights with Pulse Ox on. It reports sleep stages, HRV status, Pulse Ox and skin temperature changes to the Garmin Connect app. Garmin's launch price was $169.99, and REI listed it at $170.00 with both sizes sold out. Garmin says it isn't a medical device, and no accuracy figures for the band were readable. Its warranty and return terms couldn't be read either.

Strengths on paper

  • Garmin rates the battery at up to 7 nights with Pulse Ox on, and a full charge takes up to 2 hours
  • Worn on the upper arm, so nothing has to be on your wrist or finger at night
  • The band is machine-washable once the module is removed
  • Sleep data can be combined with a compatible Garmin watch worn during the day
  • Vibrating smart wake alarm that works in a 30-minute window before the set time

Limitations

  • Garmin's own US product page showed no price when checked, so the $170.00 here is REI's listing, which had both sizes sold out (the launch price was $169.99)
  • HRV status needs three weeks of consistent sleep data before it reports, and skin temperature needs three nights to set a baseline
  • Proprietary charging cable, and the manual sends you to buy.garmin.com or a Garmin dealer for replacement parts
  • Garmin doesn't publish the module's dimensions, weight or onboard data storage on the pages checked
  • The accuracy of its sleep-stage, HRV and Pulse Ox estimates is unconfirmed: Garmin's accuracy page didn't display its text, so no accuracy figures were read, and no independent validation study was reviewed

Incomplete: other annual costs, energy use. This is not the full ownership cost.

Energy component: Unknown

Purchase + installation + years × (annual consumables + annual other) + watts/1000 × hours/day × 365 × years × $/kWh. Annualized allowances, not an exact replacement schedule. Excludes taxes, shipping, finance and resale unless entered.
Replacement parts & cost assumptions

No scheduled consumable is listed. That does not mean zero maintenance or repair costs.

  • Purchase uses REI's $170.00 listing from Oct 13, 2026, because Garmin's US product page displayed no price. REI had both sizes marked sold out. Garmin's June 2025 launch release gave a suggested retail price of $169.99. Confirm the current price and stock before buying.
  • Other annual costs are left unknown rather than set to $0. Neither the launch release nor the owner's manual mentions a subscription, but no Garmin page checked says the listed features need no paid plan.
  • No replaceable parts or refills are listed, so annual consumables are $0. That doesn't mean a replacement band, a lost charging cable, battery wear or an out-of-warranty repair costs nothing. Charging power draw isn't stated, so energy is left unknown.
  • Installation is $0 because the band only needs pairing with the Garmin Connect app.

Evidence & sources.

How accurate are sleep trackers? Our evidence review grades the research as Moderate. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • Manufacturer claimBattery life, charging, sizes, sensors and metrics, smart wake alarm, water rating, care instructions and app compatibility come from Garmin's launch release and owner's manual.13 Manufacturer information, not independent testing.
  • Manufacturer claimGarmin states the Index Sleep Monitor "is not a medical device and is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition." The manual advises contacting a doctor or healthcare provider about breathing-variation concerns. Pulse Ox isn't available in all countries. Garmin also says menstrual cycle tracking shouldn't be used in support of conception, contraception or birth control.23 This is Garmin's own regulatory position, and Garmin claims no FDA clearance or authorization. The FDA 510(k) and De Novo databases weren't checked.
  • Manufacturer claimGarmin's launch release refers readers to garmin.com/ataccuracy for accuracy information. That page loaded its text with JavaScript and showed no readable accuracy figures when checked. No independent validation study of the Index Sleep Monitor was reviewed.25 That leaves the accuracy of the band's sleep stage, HRV status, Pulse Ox and skin temperature readings unconfirmed.
