AquaTruClassic

Plug-in countertop RO with published lab results and a small tank

Source-based analysis, not hands-on testing. Our method

The verdict

The Classic is a $475 reverse osmosis purifier that plugs in and needs no plumbing. AquaTru's data sheet reports lab-tested cuts in lead, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate and PFOA/PFOS. The catch is a 0.75-gallon purified water tank, a 10 gpg hardness limit and a one-year warranty.

The trade-off

You refill it by hand, hard water scales the membrane, and the warranty lasts one year.

About this price

List price for the Classic with the VOC Carbon Filter, without a filter subscription, on AquaTru's product page on Oct 13, 2026, before tax and shipping. The page shows no sale or strikethrough price, and AquaTru's store listing shows no regular price either, so it isn't a markdown. The same page sells the Classic with the Alkaline Mineral Boost VOC filter for $495 and the Classic Smart for $525 or $545. A "Classic + Filter Subscription" option says you save, but the page doesn't say by how much.

A GOOD FIT FOR

A renter or small household that wants RO water from an outlet instead of an under-sink install.

  • You rent or can't drill, and want RO water from an outlet and a 12 by 14 inch spot on the counter
  • City water under 10 grains per gallon of hardness and 1,500 mg/L TDS
  • You want published lab results for lead, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate and PFOA/PFOS before you buy
  • One or two people who drink filtered water and don't mind refilling a tank by hand

THINK TWICE IF

  • Hard water above 10 gpg, unless you soften it first or accept descaling the membrane
  • Well water with iron, manganese or sulfide above 0.1 mg/L
  • A big household that also cooks with filtered water, since filter costs climb above about 1.6 gallons a day
  • You want filtered water from a faucet without carrying tanks
  • You need more than a one-year warranty
What still needs checking
  • Wattage and how long it takes to purify a full tank
  • Whether IAPMO's own listing matches the data sheet, and which model numbers and contaminants it covers
  • The filter subscription's discount
  • Price and terms of the extended warranty, and the full warranty exclusions
  • What the tanks are made of
  • The tap tank's size, since the page's FAQ gives tank figures that conflict with its specs

The practical details.

Before you buy

InstallationNo plumbing or drilling

No plumbing or drilling. Plug it into a 120 V outlet, fill the tap water tank and run it on the counter. AquaTru says your water should be under 10 grains per gallon of hardness, or lime scale builds on the RO membrane. It sells a descaling kit for $19.95. The data sheet sets a feed water range of 39 to 100°F and pH 3 to 11, with up to 1,500 mg/L TDS. Chlorine must be under 2 ppm, and iron, manganese and sulfide under 0.1 mg/L. A countertop sliding tray is sold for $29.95.

WarrantyOne-year limited warranty

One-year limited warranty. AquaTru's product page says it will repair or replace the unit for problems with materials or workmanship. It mentions extended coverage but gives no price or terms. Registration is encouraged, not described as required. The product, FAQ and registration pages don't give full terms, exclusions or a claim process.

Returns30-day money-back guarantee, counted from the day it's delivered

30-day money-back guarantee, counted from the day it's delivered. You contact AquaTru, which emails a return label, and you send it back in the original packaging with all parts. The refund covers the purchase price, but shipping and handling costs, including the return label, are deducted. Refunds are processed when the unit reaches AquaTru's warehouse and can take up to 10 business days to show.

More about this assessment

The Classic is AquaTru's $475 reverse osmosis purifier, and it needs only a 120 V outlet, with no plumbing. You pour tap water into one tank, and purified water collects in a 0.75-gallon tank, so you'll refill it often. Filters run about $130 a year at AquaTru's month limits. AquaTru's data sheet names IAPMO R&T as the certifier, but the IAPMO listing couldn't be checked. The warranty is one year, and your water should be under 10 grains per gallon of hardness.

Strengths on paper

  • No plumbing, drilling or drain line; it needs only an outlet
  • Lab results for lead, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate and cysts under NSF/ANSI 58, and PFOA and PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53
  • Rated at 75% efficiency, so about a quarter of the tap water you pour in ends up as reject
  • Filters cost about $130 a year at AquaTru's intervals, and each one is sold separately
  • A filter-life indicator counts the gallons it has made
  • 30-day money-back guarantee from the delivery date

Limitations

  • Small 0.75-gallon purified water tank, so you'll refill it and wait for a new batch often
  • Feed water must be under 10 gpg hardness; above that, scale builds on the RO membrane
  • One-year limited warranty, with extended coverage mentioned but not priced
  • Returns lose the shipping and handling costs, including the return label
  • The FAQ's P473 claim isn't on the data sheet, and the IAPMO listing couldn't be checked
  • Arsenic reduction is rated only for water with free chlorine at the inlet, or water shown to hold only pentavalent arsenic
  • No published power draw, so running costs are unknown
  • Takes a 12 by 14 inch footprint, 14 inches tall and about 17 lb

Replacement parts & cost assumptions

Recorded recurring parts and refills:

  • Classic One-Year Filter Combo Pack: $99.85 every 12 months. Two Pre/Carbon filters and one VOC carbon filter, a year's worth at AquaTru's intervals. It doesn't include the RO filter. The price equals buying the three filters separately.
  • Classic Reverse Osmosis Filter: $59.95 every 24 months. Lasts 2 years or 1,200 gallons.
  • Classic Pre/Carbon Filter: $29.95 every 6 months. Lasts 6 months or 600 gallons. Buy it singly if you'd rather skip the combo pack.
  • Classic VOC Carbon Filter: $39.95 every 12 months. Lasts 1 year or 600 gallons. The Mineral Boost Alkaline version costs $49.95 with the same life.
  • Classic Two-Year Filter Combo Pack: $259.65 every 24 months. Four Pre/Carbon filters, two VOC carbon filters and one RO filter. It costs the same as buying them one at a time.
  • Classic Descaling Kit: $19.95. For lime scale on the RO membrane. AquaTru doesn't give an interval. Its FAQ says water above 10 gpg needs regular descaling.
  • Purchase is the $475 list price on AquaTru's product page on Oct 13, 2026, before tax and shipping.
  • Annual consumables are the $99.85 one-year combo pack (two Pre/Carbon filters and one VOC filter) plus half of the $59.95 RO filter, which lasts two years. That's $129.83 a year. The $259.65 two-year pack comes to the same.
  • Filter life is also capped by volume: 600 gallons for the Pre/Carbon and VOC filters and 1,200 for the RO filter. Above about 1.6 gallons a day, the VOC and RO filters reach their gallon limit before their month limit.
  • At about 3.3 gallons a day (1,200 gallons a year), you'd need two Pre/Carbon filters, two VOC filters and one RO filter a year. At single-filter prices that's $199.75 a year.
  • Installation is $0 because it sits on the counter and plugs into an outlet.
  • Energy is unknown. AquaTru gives the voltage but not the wattage or how long a batch takes.
  • There's no required subscription, so other yearly costs are $0. The optional filter subscription's discount isn't stated.

Evidence & sources.

Do water filters work? Our evidence review grades the research as Strong. That grade is about the claim, not about this product.

  • CertificationAquaTru's FAQ says its Classic countertop and Under Sink models are certified by IAPMO, and that AquaTru is listed on IAPMO's site under AquaTru LLC. IAPMO's directory page showed no search or listings when fetched, so the listing wasn't confirmed.24 The listing's scope, model numbers and status are unverified. The test results here come from AquaTru's own copy of the data sheet.
  • Manufacturer claimAquaTru's performance data sheet names IAPMO R&T as the certifier under NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 372 and 401. Under NSF/ANSI 58, it cut lead from a 0.15 mg/L challenge by 97.5% minimum and 99.1% on average, against a 0.010 mg/L maximum.35 Other NSF/ANSI 58 minimum reductions: pentavalent arsenic 95.8%, fluoride 91.8%, hexavalent chromium 94.3%, nitrate plus nitrite 70.0%, perchlorate 95.0%, TDS 75.7% and cysts 99.95%. The sheet says to rely on the arsenic result only with free chlorine at the inlet, and that chloramine isn't enough. These are lab results at the standard's challenge levels, not measurements of your water.
  • Manufacturer claimFor PFOA and PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53, the sheet lists a 1.5 µg/L challenge, a 0.02 µg/L maximum in the product water and a 97.5% minimum reduction. Under the same standard it lists dozens of VOCs, pesticides and trihalomethanes.5 The sheet doesn't list other PFAS separately. AquaTru's FAQ says the countertop models are certified for 84 contaminants in total.
  • Manufacturer claimUnder NSF/ANSI 401, the sheet lists 15 emerging compounds, including ibuprofen (95.1%), bisphenol A (99.0%) and DEET (93.3%). Microplastics of 0.5 to under 1 µm fell 96.48%. Under NSF/ANSI 42, chlorine fell 97% and chloramine 96%.5 Average reductions at the standard's challenge levels, in ng/L for the 401 compounds.
  • Manufacturer claimAquaTru's FAQ says the Classic meets NSF standards "41, 53, 58, 401 and P473". The data sheet lists 42, 53, 58, 372 and 401 and shows no 473 or P473 results.25 "41" looks like a typo for 42. The P473 claim couldn't be matched to any published result or listing.
  • Manufacturer claimAquaTru rates the Classic at 54 gallons a day, 75% efficiency and 80% recovery. Its FAQ says it recirculates water and concentrates contaminants in the tap water tank.25 Manufacturer ratings under lab conditions, not independent measurements.
