What earns a place
The guide covers drinking water filters for the home, sold to US buyers at a published price. It runs from pitchers to countertop and under-sink reverse osmosis (RO), under-sink carbon filters and whole-house systems. Prices checked on October 13, 2026 show the spread. The Brita Ultramax dispenser was $49.9938. The SpringWell CF1 whole-house system was $1,160.25 on sale2.
The pitchers and dispenser are the Clearly Filtered pitcher, the LifeStraw Home 7-Cup Glass and the Brita Ultramax with the Elite filter. The AquaTru Classic and AquaTru Carafe are countertop RO units. Under the sink there are RO systems from APEC, Waterdrop and iSpring, plus carbon filters from Aquasana and Waterdrop. The whole-house filters are the Aquasana Rhino, iSpring WGB32B, SpringWell CF1 and Waterdrop WD-WHF3T-PG.
A filter has to suit a real household need: a renter with no plumbing, one kitchen tap, or every tap in the house. It also needs enough published detail to judge: a price, filter prices and schedules, and warranty and return terms.
Where the facts come from
Every water review is built from the sources it cites: maker pages, manuals, data sheets and policies, certifier listings and published studies. Prices are checked on the date shown.
What we weigh
Eight questions decide the picks. Each answer comes from the maker’s page, manual, data sheet or online store, or from a certifier’s listing, with the date it was checked.
- What it’s certified to remove. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic impurities such as chlorine, taste and odor, and NSF/ANSI 53 covers contaminants with a health effect3. NSF itself says certification doesn’t mean a filter reduces every contaminant3. NSF lists the Clearly Filtered pitcher under NSF/ANSI 424. Its lead, PFAS and fluoride figures come from lab tests Clearly Filtered publishes, which isn’t the same as certification5.
- Whether a listing confirms it. Aquasana says WQA certified the Claryum to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 4016. WQA’s database blocked automated access when checked, so that listing is unconfirmed. NSF has no listing for the Waterdrop G3P600 or G3P80078. That rules out NSF, not every certifier. NSF does list iSpring’s RO500AK-BN under NSF/ANSI 58, but only for TDS reduction39.
- How it fits your home. The AquaTru Classic needs no plumbing or drilling and plugs into a 120 V outlet9. The Waterdrop WD-10UA goes on the cold line and feeds your existing faucet, so it doesn’t need a faucet of its own42. Under-sink RO needs a cold-water line, a drain and a faucet hole. APEC’s manual calls for a 1/2 in faucet hole and a 1/4 in hole in the drain pipe for the ROES-5011. Whole-house filters go on the main line, and Aquasana strongly recommends a licensed plumber for the Rhino1213.
- Output and drain water. APEC rates the ROES-50 at 50 GPD at 60 psi, falling to 30 GPD at 50 psi10. Waterdrop rates the G3P600 at 600 GPD with a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio, and the G3P800 at 800 GPD and 3:11415. Waterdrop doesn’t give the test conditions for either. The AquaTru Classic has no drain line. It needs no plumbing, and AquaTru says it concentrates contaminants in the tap water tank917. The AquaTru Carafe is rated at 35 GPD and 63% efficiency, so about 37% of the water you pour in is rejected43.
- Your water. Some systems set feed-water limits. AquaTru says hardness should stay under 10 grains per gallon, or scale builds on the membrane1617. Waterdrop’s extended-warranty terms call for TDS under 750 ppm and hardness under 7 grains per gallon18. SpringWell’s manual says not to put the CF1 on well water until you’ve spoken to customer service20.
- Filter costs and filter life. Most cartridges have a month limit and a gallon limit, and whichever comes first counts. A Clearly Filtered cartridge is rated for 100 gallons21. LifeStraw’s carbon filter is rated for just 40 gallons or 2 months44. Aquasana rates a Claryum filter set for 800 gallons or 6 months, about 4.4 gallons a day22. If you use more, you’ll pay more than the yearly figure in the review.
- Warranty and returns. Eleven of the 15 carry a one-year warranty, including the APEC, both AquaTru models, the Brita and the three Waterdrop under-sink systems9141523424546. LifeStraw gives 3 years but excludes breakage and drops, which matters for a glass pitcher47. The Rhino’s warranty runs 10 years or 1,000,000 gallons24. Returns vary more. APEC keeps 10% of an opened, unused unit and 50% of a used one that isn’t defective25. SpringWell won’t take back an installed system unless it finds a defect26.
- Power. AquaTru gives the Classic’s voltage but not its wattage16. For the Carafe, AquaTru’s help center lists 36 W in use and about 4 W idle4849. Waterdrop doesn’t publish the power draw of the G3P600 or G3P8001415. The iSpring RO500AK-BN’s product page doesn’t say whether it needs power at all27. So running costs for those stay incomplete.
Why one filter over another
Each pick names the need it serves, its trade-off and an alternative. Picks are for different needs, not a ranking. A lower price, a smaller footprint or clearer terms can justify a pick. None of those proves a filter does more for your health, and there are no scores or star ratings.
A finding for one model doesn’t carry over to another. That goes for a certificate, a test result and a price. NSF lists Brita’s Elite filter in two Brita pitchers, but a search for the Ultramax dispenser’s model number finds nothing4041. AquaTru’s Classic and Carafe use the same three filter types, but the Carafe’s are rated for half the gallons1643. The Claryum review uses the $449.99 on the Chrome version’s own page, and Aquasana’s under-sink page showed the same price with no sale2829.
What we don’t weigh
Headline contaminant counts don’t move a filter up. Clearly Filtered’s product page says the pitcher targets 386+ contaminants1. One FAQ answer on the same page says it was tested against 365+1. Waterdrop says the G3P800’s membrane reduces over 1,000 contaminants, with no per-contaminant results in the page text15. What counts is the result for the contaminant you care about.
A logo without a listing doesn’t count. APEC’s page shows a WQA logo for the ROES-50 but gives no certificate number or standard10. NSF’s database has no listing for APEC30. Materials standards don’t count as removal either. NSF’s listing explains that NSF/ANSI 372 means a product meets the lead content rules for “lead free” plumbing4. Aquasana says the Rhino’s NSF/ANSI 61 certification covers materials safety only1231.
A TDS readout isn’t a safety test. The G3P800’s faucet shows TDS and filter life15. A low TDS number doesn’t tell you whether lead or PFAS went down, so the display doesn’t count.
Claims without a baseline are set aside too. iSpring says the RO500AK-BN cuts water waste by up to 400% compared with traditional RO systems, without naming the comparison27. So are table rows that seem to describe another product. A comparison table on the WGB32B page lists NSF/ANSI 58 certification beside RO features such as 75 GPD output32. It doesn’t seem to describe this whole-house filter.
How facts are checked
Every fact in a review cites the page it came from and the date it was checked. When a maker’s documents disagree, the review gives both. SpringWell’s product page puts the CF1’s media life at 10 years, and its manual says 61920. AquaTru’s FAQ lists NSF standards “41, 53, 58, 401 and P473” for the Classic, while its data sheet lists 42, 53, 58, 372 and 4011617. Waterdrop rates the WD-10UA’s cartridge at 11,000 gallons on its product page and 8,000 in its store description4250.
Certifier databases are searched by brand and model. NSF’s listings were searched for APEC, AquaTru, Aquasana, Brita, Clearly Filtered, iSpring, LifeStraw, SpringWell and Waterdrop430333539405152. WQA’s database blocked automated access, and IAPMO’s directory couldn’t be searched. Some reviews cite a third-party filter database as a pointer to those listings, never as the listing itself53. A listing that couldn’t be checked is recorded as unconfirmed, not as a pass or a fail. A figure a maker doesn’t publish is recorded as not stated, never as zero.
How prices are checked
Prices are US prices for the exact variant, from the official product page or the maker’s online store, before tax and shipping. The prices quoted here were checked on October 13, 2026. A sale is labeled as a sale. The Rhino’s $999 was a limited-time sale against a $1,998 MSRP12. The SpringWell CF1’s $1,160.25 was 15% off a $1,365 regular price2.
A “Sale price” label alone doesn’t make a markdown. APEC’s page uses that label for the ROES-50 but shows no regular price, and its store listing shows no crossed-out price1036. So $230.99 is treated as the list price.
Checkout codes, member prices and autoship discounts aren’t deducted. Waterdrop’s page showed the G3P600 at $439 with code WDG3P600B, so the review uses the $539 store price1437. Aquasana shows Water for Life members $359.99 for the Claryum, against $449.99 for everyone else29. Clearly Filtered’s autoship option shows $99, 10% off, but the review uses the $110 one-time price1. The WD-10UA showed $39.99 only with code WDUA, so its review uses the $58.99 list price4250.
The three-year estimate adds the purchase, installation, three years of filters and other recurring costs, and electricity at an editable $0.18 per kWh. Unknown items stay out of an incomplete subtotal and aren’t counted as zero. Drain water from an RO system adds to your water bill, but it depends on local rates and no review prices it. The ownership cost explainer shows the formula and the recurring costs, system by system.
What we don’t do
These limits apply to every water review and pick.
- We don’t publish lab results or measurements of our own. Every figure comes from the sources a review cites.
- We don’t give scores, star ratings or a single overall winner.
- We don’t say whether your water is safe. A water report or a well test answers that. APEC says not to use the ROES-50 on microbiologically unsafe water without disinfection, and Clearly Filtered says its pitcher isn’t for water of unknown quality511.
- We don’t make health claims for any filter.
- We don’t count an unknown cost as zero, or carry one model’s figure over to another.
- We don’t present a sale price as a list price or deduct checkout codes.
